WICHITA, Kan. — It’s simple for Carson Tayor.
One match at a time.
The Fort Dodge state champion graduate cruised into the NAIA national quarterfinals with two convincing wins for Grand View.
“I’m feeling great,” Taylor said. “Everything is going to plan and I’m wrestling how I want.”
Taylor (23-2) is looking to become a five-time All-American and five-time-medalist.
In his opening round at 141 pounds for Grand View, Taylor cruised to a 14-1 major decision over Cole McKinley of Lourdes. Taylor had three takedowns, a reversal and three nearfall points in the match.
In the second round he beat Tristan Bremer of Providence, 8-0. Taylor picked up two takedowns in the match.
“I love those good full matches,” Taylor said. “They always are the most fun.
“But, I’m still taking it one match at a time.”
Taylor, who is 123-19 in his Viking career, is back in the quarterfinals after placing third last season and second as a sophomore.
Now up for Taylor will be eighth-seed Thomas Williams of St. Thomas. Williams had an 18-6 major decision and a 15-0 technical fall in his two matches.
Grand View is leading the team race with 50.5 team points. Southeastern is currently second with 35.5 points and Life is third with 34.
“Our team has been wrestling lights out,” Taylor said. “We are getting tons of bonus points which is awesome.
“It shows the hard work that we are putting in. We just have to keep it going all weekend.”
Quarterfinal and semifinals will be on the mat for Friday with the finals on Saturday.
