Tritons announce football class

While December marked the early national signing day for college football, Wednesday presented Iowa Central with the chance to reload for the upcoming season and beyond.

The Tritons announced a group of 61 high school seniors, including 18 from within the state borders who will join Jesse Montalto in the fall.

Iowa Central is coming off a 6-6 season that saw them win a postseason bowl game for the 14th consecutive time with a 49-6 victory over North Dakota SCS.

Gavin Kramer, a senior at Northeast, is a dual-threat quarterback, He threw for just over 1,000 yards with 13 passing touchdowns while running for 1,284 yards and 18 scores). Iowa Central has brought in former Iowa standouts Byron Jarrett, Dallas Sauser, Tyler Smith and Ty Purdy in recent years for the position.

Davarrion Clark and Tyler Knight were leading running backs for their teams last year. Clark rushed for 1,480 yards with 26 touchdowns at Cedar Falls while Knight had almost 700 yards and four scores with five tackles for loss at Center Point-Urbana.

Dubuque Senior’s Mekyael Hall and Davenport North’s Jakobe Worrels are wide receiver prospects. Hall had 44 receptions for over 500 yards and four TDs while Worrels caught 29 for 269 and two last year at Davenport North.

Ankeny’s Tristan Hall and Karsten Bernholtz were key members of the Hawk defense, as Hall recorded 49 tackles with seven for loss and three sacks while Bernholtz added 21.5 tackles with 6.5 for loss. Des Moines Lincoln senior Denver Longden had 51 tackles and four for loss while Carson Hansen from PCM picked off three passes last year.

Jalen Johnson of Dubuque Senior had 31.5 tackles with eight for loss and three sacks, even adding two receiving touchdowns. Pleasant Valley’s Avyn Nelson had 44.5 tackles with five for loss and two sacks, while Brayden Thompson of Crestwood recorded 34 tackles and had two interceptions.

The coaching staff also signed 19 from Minnesota, 12 from Illinois, nine from Missouri, two from Wisconsin and one from Alabama.
