POWER OF FOUR
Humboldt feeling confident heading to Des Moines

DES MOINES — The Humboldt wrestling team may not have the numbers, but head coach Chad Beaman believes his four state qualifiers have already written their stories.
“As a team, we fell short of our goals,” Beaman said. “We lost some continuity about mid-season. Some things were completely out of our control and some things I needed to do a better job righting the ship. This district, early on in the season, didn’t look as competitive as it ended up being.
“We simply didn’t match up very well and were going to need to have some things go our way. We had some kids extremely close, but will make them hungry for next season.”
But what didn’t happen hasn’t stopped the Wildcats getting ready to reach the podium.
Cyler Cirks (132), Tyce Clarken (138) and Landon Halverson (175) will take their final shot at earning state medals.
Sophomore Broedy Hendricks (190) is in his second state appearance.
Cirks (31-8) is making his third appearance after qualifying as a sophomore and freshman. The senior has 134 career victories.
“Cyler has been a staple of our program his whole career,” Beaman said. “He’s sacrificed weight cuts, moved up weight classes, fought through injuries, all for the benefit of the team. He’s a veteran at the state tournament.
“He had a very dominant district tournament and look for him to continue that this week.”
Hendricks (42-3), the four seed, is trying to return to Saturday night’s action. Hendricks made a splash his freshman season, reaching the finals.
But for Beaman, it’s more about what Hendricks has done for his teammates than on the mat.
“He continues to be a force. What I am probably most proud of is he had the opportunity to go down a weight this season and decided to stay for basically two reasons,” Beaman said. “Reason one — it made our team better and 175 was also way more suitable for Landon. He wants the others around him to be successful and almost wants more success for Landon than himself .
Reason two — the toughest competition is at 190. The top 4 or 5 are complete hammers and he wants that kind of challenge and competition.”
Clarken (37-5) enters as the four seed, a year after earning 43 wins and placing eighth.
“If you don’t get excited for wrestling watching Tyce, I don’t think you’re paying attention,” Beaman said. “He’s another one in this senior class that has been so consistent and contributed so much to this program.
“We’re excited to see where this state tournament takes him as the No. 4 seed.
This is Halverson’s (42-8) first trip to state.
“Landon is so deserving,” Beaman said. “He’s battled injuries over the past couple of years and been so close and to see him move on was really special.
“He and Broedy have been great practice partners all season.”
The Class 2A session will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday. Saturday at 9 a.m. will be the all class consolation semifinals and finals.
Awards and the Grand March along with the finals will be Saturday night at 5:15 p.m.
