CORALVILLE — Brooklyn Robinson has a chance to cap off a memorable senior season in style.

The Humboldt senior rolled through her first two opponents to advance to the semifinals here on Thursday at the girls state wrestling tournament.

Robinson (41-6) made quick work of both of her Class 1A foes in the opening round.

Robinson, the sixth seed, pinned New Hampton/Turkey Valley’s Ava Trende (31-11) in a minute of the first round.

“To reach the semis is a milestone I’ve wanted so bad since the first time I qualified,” Robinson said. “I’m overjoyed to be able to do that to prove to myself the kind wrestler I am and show up for my friends and family.”

Robinson upset third-seeded Emma Cook (42-5) of Colfax-Mingo in 1:36 to advance to the semifinals.

“I could not be more proud of Brooklyn and how she has continued to make improvement all year long this year,” said Humboldt head coach Andy Newell. “She has been a leader in the wrestling room all year and continues to do the things that have put her where she is today.”

The two victories ran Robinson’s career mark to 104-37 for the Wildcats.

Up next in the semifinals will be second seed Jocelyn Buffum (38-6) of Missouri Valley.

“She has had the mindset of one match at a time and continues to believe that she can do it,” Newell said. “I am so excited for her. She has etched her name in the record books with so many things but being the first IGHSAU state place winner is at the top for her.”

Robinson is Humboldt’s fourth semifinalist. Kendal Clark was a state champion and runner up, while Rylee Coyle placed second as well. Robinson will be the first sanctioned semifinalist.

“This season has taught me more about mindset than anything,” Robinson said. “This being my senior year this year has been about having fun with my teammates, especially my sister Kennedy.

“I’ve learned to be happy I get the opportunity to wrestle and going for a state title makes me even more grateful for the opportunity.”

Teammate Danica Diedrick (42-10), who was in her second state tournament, went 1-2 on the day.

Diedrick lost by fall in her opening round match, but bounced back with an 8-4 decision over Emma Walker (32-10) of Panorama.

Diedrick was eliminated from the 170 pound bracket, losing by fall to Briar Blake (27-1) of North Tama.

All three of Algona’s state qualifiers are alive in the medal round.
