Gaels win 11th straight
POCAHONTAS — Ahead of a showdown with top-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake, the St. Edmond boys extended their win streak to 11 with a 64-52 victory over Pocahontas Area here Thursday night.
The No. 7 (1A) Gaels avenged a prior loss earlier this week to Humboldt, and now, they get the chance to do the same to the Lions on Friday night.
“You have to give Pocahontas Area credit because they played very well,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They hit some big shots and we just couldn’t really put anything together.”
St. Edmond (17-2 overall), which has now won each of the last sixth meetings between the two, were led by Jakob Koopman, as the junior scored 25. Hunter Horn added 19 and Ty Mericle had eight.
“Jakob had a big game and Ty hit some key shots,” Kochendorfer said. “They were focusing on Hunter and did a good job on him.
“We missed some free throws that could have put the game out of reach a little sooner.”
The Indians (4-15) hung around all night, as they were down by just four after the first and six at the break. They also took the lead for a brief time in the fourth, as Karson Welander scored a team-high 12 with Gabe Ehn adding 11.
The Gaels have just two games remaining, as they play Clear Lake Friday and host Webster City Tuesday for Senior Night. St. Edmond will honor its 2000 state championship team at halftime of the boys game.
