Gaels can’t get past Bulldogs

HAMPTON — The St. Edmond girls basketball team ended a long four day stretch with a road loss to Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Friday.

The Gaels (5-11 overall) dropped a 63-48 contest to the 12th-ranked Bulldogs.

St. Edmond has played three games in the past four days and a tight four-point loss to West Bend-Mallard on Thursday night.

They lost a six-point game to Algona on Tuesday.

“We’ve been playing on some tired legs,” said St. Edmond head coach CJ Tracy. “We kept playing and had the lead down early in the fourth quarter.

“We also didn’t execute our game plan. This was a good learning experience.”

The Bulldogs got out to a 35-21 halftime lead and built the lead into the 20s in the second half. St. Edmond cut into the margin and got it to 12, but it was too much to overcome.

The Gaels had another strong night behind the three-point arc, connecting for a season-high eight triples, which they’ve done three times.

Three Gaels reached double figures, led by Payton Bradley’s 11. Chloe Palmer and Josie Harvey had 10 each. Bradley hit three twos, while Palmer added two and Ava Bradley, Harvey and Huss had one each.

“One thing about this group is if we get done, we keep fighting,” Tracy said. “They hate to lose. Against Algona we had a shot that just went in and out and we were there.

“They could have put their tail between their legs, but they fought back.”

The Bulldogs were led by 22 from Lily Hambly. Jordan Valley added 13.

St. Edmond is back in action on Tuesday when they host Humboldt as part of a girl/boy doubleheader.
