Fort Dodge cruises to another IAC wrestling championship
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge wrestling team continued their dominance at the Iowa Alliance Conference tournament here on Saturday.
For the third straight year since its inception, the Dodgers claimed the team title after scoring 226 points. Marshalltown was next with 195.5.
FDSH flexed its muscle, placing nine in the finals and claiming a record-tying seven champs. Thirteen Dodgers placed in the Top-6 of their respective weights.
“It was the guys in the shadows that won this tournament for us,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “We got some losses back, which will be good for seeding.
“Now we get ready for the rest of the postseason and the home stretch.”
Two-time defending state champion an Dreshaun Ross (215) won his third conference championship in as many years, while defending gold medalist Koy Davidson (144) won his second IAC title overall after finishing second last season.
Sophomore Trace Rial (106), freshman Damien Yeoman (113), juniors Rylee Brown (157), and Jesse Egli (175), and sophomore Joe Constable (285) claimed their first conference crowns. Freshman Drake Hayes (126) and sophomore Jayce Skow (165) secured silver.
With the seven champs, Fort Dodge now has 18 individual titles in the three years, tying their record of seven in 2023 where they had an IAC-best 254 points.
Yeoman (33-15) defeated Waterloo East’s Nolan Pfalzgraf 12-4 in the championship match, turning around a 11-9 loss in the Dodger gym during the regular season. Yeoman added a fall and tech fall to his ledger on Saturday.
“Damien had a great day, majoring a kid that beat him in a dual,” Thompson said. “That was huge for Damien to turn that around.”
Ross (15-0), a junior, had two falls in under a minute, pinning Ames Jiralya Fonseca (49 seconds) in the semifinals and Des Moines Lincoln’s Lance Clark (0:59).
Ross, who committed to Oklahoma State University for wrestling on Sunday, is now 106-2 in his prep career. He’s won 99 consecutive matches for the Dodgers.
Davidson (32-2), a senior, had two technical falls. The Oregon State University recruit dominated Isaac Lomas of Waterloo East 21-5 in the finals after beating Marshalltown’s Anthony Chavez in the semis, 20-1.
Davidson is now 139-18 in his career, and is ninth on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list, ahead of Erik Birnbaum (137-38). Davidson now trails 204 FDSH graduate Damarion Ross (141-34) for eighth.
Constable (37-6) rolled to the heavyweight championship. He beat Jah’Marion Fenceroy of Des Moines East (12-2) in the finals and Ames’ Dayne Hayes, 20-3 in the semifinals.
Brown (32-15), a two-time state qualifier, picked up a fall in 5:58 over Emmanuel Dennis of Des Moines East to win the title. In the semifinals, Brown blanked Carson Wright of Marshalltown, 15-0 in 2:42.
“Our guys with experience came out and took care of business,” Thompson said. “They knew what they needed to do and went out aggressively and got wins.”
Brown is 18-6 since coming back from Christmas break, with two of his losses to standout Bas Diaz of Waverly-Shell Rock.
“Rylee has been wrestling really well since Christmas,” Thompson said. “He’s going in the right direction and it’s good to see him turn a corner like this.”
Egli (31-11), also a two-time state qualifier, earned a tight SV-1 5-2 victory over Dalton Zednichek of Marshalltown in the finals. He beat Erik Alvarado of Des Moines Lincoln, 16-5, in the semis.
Rial (23-4) earned a 6-3 decision over Mariyon Norton of Waterloo East in the finals and a 17-2 tech fall over Nicholas Million of Marshalltown in his opener.
Hayes (6-6) a freshman, earned SV-1, 6-3 decision over Ottumwa’s Brock Garcia (25-12) in the semifinals before falling to Christian Castillo (36-0) of Ames in the gold medal round.
Skow (13-20) had a 17-2 technical fall over Daveon Davis of Des Moines East in the semifinals. He lost to Zayvion Anderson of Marshalltown by fall (3:00) in the finals.
Senior John Phan (190) placed fourth for the Dodgers. Senior Hunter Richardson (150) and freshman Amari McCaleb (138) were fifth. Junior Hunter Kasperbauer (120) took sixth.
“As a freshman, to see Drake knock off a kid that had 20-plus wins is huge,” Thompson said. “That should definitely be a confidence booster.
“Amari (McCaleb) and Hunter Richardson had some good matches that will be good for confidence.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Pleasant Hill for a Class 3A regional dual. Fort Dodge will face Cedar Rapids Prairie first, with the winner meeting top-ranked Southeast Polk for the right to advance to the state dual tournament.
