Dodger girls open postseason
STORM LAKE — The Fort Dodge girls basketball team tips off their second season against a familiar opponent here on Wednesday.
The Dodgers will make their second trip to Storm Lake in as many weeks and take on the Tornadoes in a Class 4A, Region 7 quarterfinal. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
On Feb. 6, Storm Lake (14-7 overall) pulled away for a 58-32 victory over Fort Dodge. The Tornadoes prevailed in their last four regular-season contests, including a 67-62 triumph over Class 1A power Newell-Fonda in the finale.
The Dodgers (8-14), meanwhile, have dropped six of seven. They were edged at home last Tuesday by Iowa Alliance Conference South division champion Des Moines Roosevelt, 51-48.
The slate is now wiped clean, though.
In their regular-season meeting, junior LJ Maehl paced FDSH with 18 points and nine rebounds. Seniors Brooklyn Pommer and Meah McCaleb combined for 11 boards, and sophomore Ellie Doster added seven rebounds.
Junior Dakota Pommer chipped in four steals and three assists.
The Dodgers struggled from the field (12 of 44) and three-point range (2-for-17) that night, also turning the ball over 25 times.
Avery DeHaan (13 points), Maddy Raveling (12) and Adeeya Yanga (12) led a balanced Storm Lake attack the first time around, with Grace Kenkel recording eight rebounds and Raveling six assists.
Maehl scores at an 18.5-point clip — the seventh-best average in 4A — while also pulling down 8.1 rebounds. At 961 points in her three-year varsity career, Maehl ranks behind only former Drake University basketball player Molly Nelson (1,172 points) and ex-Northern Iowa softball standout Morgan Paulson (995) on the program’s all-time scoring charts for the 5-on-5 era.
Maehl already owns single-season point records for a freshman, sophomore and junior. Her current scoring average for the year is the best at the school since Nelson (19.7 in 1997-98).
McCaleb (7.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 4.0 steals) is Fort Dodge’s most versatile player on both ends. She is fourth in all of 4A in steals.
Yanga, a 6-foot senior, averages 17 points for the Tornadoes. DeHaan, a 5-10 junior, is at 13.4.
The winner of this contest heads to Carroll (16-6) on Saturday for a regional semifinal.
