Tritons finish 4th at national duals
MIAMI, Okla. — The Iowa Central wrestling team brought home a fourth place finish here Saturday at the NJCAA Coaches Duals.
After capturing first in pool action, the Tritons were bested for third place honors by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, the host school. In the meet, Iowa Central downed NEO, 27-15, as part of a perfect start.
“I’m disappointed where we ended up,” said Iowa Central head coach Luke Moffitt. “We beat NEO on Friday, but lost to them for third place.
“I learned a lot about our team and we had a practice this morning and talked about growth.”
Western Wyoming topped Clackamas for top honors, 28-10.
The Tritons earned the No. 2 seed in bracket play, topping Rochester Tech to start the eight-team field, 30-18. They fell to Clackamas in the semifinals, 28-15.
Coen Grimm went a perfect 8-0 at 197 pounds, earning two technical falls and a major decision. Sam Libby finished off his eight matches with seven wins including three pins.
Chance Davis had a record of 6-2 during the event, Kaden King (5-0) and Hayden Taylor (4-0) both went unbeaten, Jaydale Whitlock and Umair Ahmad each won four matches, Xavian Geronimo was 3-1 and Lawrence Rosario won three times.
“It’s good that this happened now than in March,” Moffitt said. “We went down to show our cards and to find out where we are at.
“We are better than what we showed and we have work to do.”
Iowa Central is back in action on Wednesday in Centerville against Indian Hills.
