Fort Dodge’s Benedict second in Ogden

OGDEN – Mariaha Benedict and Makayla Liska earned spots on the podium here Saturday at the Ogden Tournament.

Benedict was a runner-up and Liska placed fifth for the Fort Dodge girls wrestling team.

Osage took home team gold ahead of Ankeny and South Tama County. Algona was fifth, Humboldt placed 13th, Manson Northwest Webster finished 16th and the Dodgers were 18th overall.

Benedict picked up a fall, a medical forfeit and a major decision to reach the finals at 135 pounds. She came up short against Cadence Bushong of Nevada, securing silver.

“Bushong is good,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “She was tall and just caught Mariaha in a headlock and pinned her. She just needs to put that in the back of her mind and remember what happens if she sees her again.”

Liska was 2-2 at 155 pounds, earning a 51-second fall in the quarterfinals and a 22-second pin in the fifth-place match.

“Makayla was pretty close with Aaron Miller, so it was pretty tough when we found out about 7 a.m.,” Koenig said. “That was on her mind and she was in a super tough bracket with McGrew, who is a state champion and Lucy Kohnen of Manson Northwest Webster who is good.”

Jessenia Elias scored a fall in her first round match at 170 pounds.

Algona had nine wrestlers place, led by runner-up Laura Stohr. Reagan Haynes finished third while Emmy Owen, Malyn Davis and Makayla Erpending were all fourth.

Humboldt’s Danica Diedrick was a runner-up at 170 while Brooklyn Robinson took home fourth. Lucy Kohnen finished third and Adelynn Hudek fourth for Manson Northwest Webster, and Samantha Wolter was fifth for Pocahontas Area.

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Ames for a triangular with the Little Cyclones and Boone.

Starting at $2.99/week.
