Winning the Don Miller Invitational wasn’t even on the radar for Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman.
With only one champion on Saturday the Wildcats did all their work on the backside to win their first ever championship in Fort Dodge.
Humboldt scored 217.5 points. Algona (204.5), Decorah (170.5) and Fort Dodge (165.5) followed.
“This is a super tough tournament,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “To be honest it wasn’t one of our goals to come over here and win.
“We just wanted to compete and compete in tough matches.”
The Wildcats went 8-5 in placement matches with top-ranked (No. 1 at 175 by IAwrestle) Broedy Hendricks winning the 190 pound championship.
“We had two guys in the finals and had a champion, but we won it on the backside,” Beaman said. “The guys wrestled tough and kept competing, especially on the consolation side.”
Cyler Cirks (8-2) was second at 132 pounds. Sam Knight (113), Tyce Clarken (138), Brady Beers (144), and Landon Halverson (175) all earned bronze.
Placing fourth was Owen Mayall (126), Trey Al-Hameed (165) and Cael Donahe (215).
Jaxson Kirchoff (150) and Braden Downs (157) were fifth, while Dylan Frideres (113) was sixth and Ayden Fiengo (285) placed seventh.
Hendricks (10-0) cruised to the title with a 14-5 major decision over Thomas Sexton of Decorah. In the semifinals he picked up a 18-2 tech fall over Brendan Lamfers of Sioux Center and won by injury default in the quarters.
Cirks (8-2) dropped a 13-1 major decision to Carter Schorsch of Lewis Central in the finals. He earned a fall in 3:41 of the semifinals and a fall in 1:11 of the quarters.
Algona
Isaac Wilson (126), Elijah Wilhite (138), Barrett Morgan (144) and Tate Slagle (157) all reached the finals for the Bulldogs, finishing as runners ups.
Wilson lost by fall to Matthew Tran of Iowa City West. Wilhite dropped an 18-2 match to Gavin Carolan of Decorah.
Morgan was pinned by top-ranked Koy Davidson (No. 1 by IAwrestle) in the finals and Slagle lost by fall to Maximus Dhabolt of Ankeny Centennial.
Placing third for the Bulldogs were Brooks Morgan (120), Ashton Moreno (150), and Carter McGregor (165).
Teague Alesch (106), and Jack Limbaugh (285) placed fourth.
Emmetsburg
Second-ranked (No. 2 at 165 by IAwrestle) Justin Wirtz (14-0) won the 175 pound championship for the E-Hawks.
Wirtz earned a 17-1 tech fall over Fort Dodge’s Jesse Egli in the finals He had two falls to reach the championship.
Nick Saxton (215) placed second. He lost to Joseph Monge of Lewis Central 19-3.
Webster City
Cody Elliott (215) earned the highest finish for the Lynx. Elliott pinned Humboldt’s Cael Donahe in 2:54 of the third place match.
Elliott had a decision and a major decision on the day.
Carson Bertran (175) placed fifth for the Lynx.
