Dodgers win home opener
Any concerns Bobby Thompson had with Thursday night’s home opener vs. Des Moines East coming down to the end were quickly silenced by his bonus-seeking Fort Dodge wrestling team.
The Dodgers, competing inside the FDSH gym for the first time this season, dominated the Scarlets, scoring 32 bonus points in claiming a one-sided 66-12 victory.
While the entire environment surrounding the meet was a little off due to a choir event being held later that night and the Fort Dodge basketball teams competing in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena, Thompson still took plenty of positives away.
“We had a lot of things going on in Fort Dodge right now,” Thompson said. “We want to make sure our kids have the opportunity to experience it all so we tried to accommodate as best we could. Still, it’s great for those kids to get a chance to compete out on the mat in front of the home crowd.”
In the lone ranked matchup of the night, Fort Dodge’s Trace Rial, a seventh-ranked sophomore at 106 pounds, pinned No. 9 Michael Lewis in just under four minutes.
Rial recorded a quick takedown and turned it into three near-fall points to take control of the match. In the second, he did the same before pinning Lewis to the mat in 3:37.
Damien Yeoman, a freshman, and junior Hunter Kasperbauer followed with a technical fall and a fall inside of the first period to give the Dodgers a quick 17-0 lead.
At 126 pounds, ninth-grader Drake Hayes entered the lineup, earning a hard-fought 7-4 decision over Derek Shannon.
“Those were some really great performances by Damien, Hunter and Drake to keep the momentum going after Trace’s win,” Thompson said. “It’s so important for those guys to get wins here when they can and gain some confidence.”
Bo Marsh and Amari McCaleb added technical falls while recording eight combined takedowns at 132 and 138 pounds, as defending state champion Koy Davidson followed with a fall in 1:15.
“Bo getting bonus points was huge for us,” Thompson said. “Hunter is an undersized kid but he just went out and really wrestled well. Damien continues to impress me for another kid who is undersized competing at that weight.
“They just really wrestled aggressive and good things happen when you do that.”
Des Moines East, who posted wins over Mason City and Des Moines North-Hoover earlier this year in duals, got on the board with a fall by Jason Rivas at 150 pounds.
Rylee Brown, Jayce Skow, Jesse Egli and Kason Echavarris quickly followed with pins for the Dodgers, as Brown, Skow and Egli all earned their victories in the first period.
Skow, a sophomore at 165 pounds, had the fastest pin of the night at 37 seconds.
“We had some kids who were on the wrong side of matches last week against Bondurant-Farrar get back on track,” Thompson said. “Jayce wrestled incredible. When you can score that many bonus points in a dual it’s a great night.”
After a fall by Wesley Jordan for the Scarlets at 215 pounds, 10th-grader Joe Constable ended the night with another pin at heavyweight in 61 seconds.
Fort Dodge finished with 25 takedowns to just eight by Des Moines East on the night, scoring five four-point near-fall attempts.
Earning junior varsity wins for FDSH were Cobey Appelgate, Kadince Kisler, Brock Trexler, John Phan, Coy Nicols, Angel Sandoval, Braxton Hines and Mason Zuspann. Applegate, Kisler, Trexler, Nichols, Hines and Zuspann scored falls while Phan won by technical fall.
Up next for the Dodgers will be the two-day Council Bluffs Classic beginning Friday. Fort Dodge was the runner-up to Waukee Northwest last year, as Davidson and Dreshaun Ross both won individual titles.
The event features over 40 teams and almost 200 ranked individuals from schools out of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and South Dakota.
