Fort Dodge girls in action on the mat

HOLSTEIN — The Fort Dodge girls competed in their first tournament of the season on Saturday.

The Dodgers took seven athletes to the Ridge View Invitational, placing 10th with 86 team points. Council Bluffs Lewis Central (203.5) was the champion, followed by Logan-Magnolia (178.5).

Freshman Brooklyn Nelson (7-2) pinned her way to the 110-pound title with two first-period falls and a pair of second-period falls.

Nelson pinned Nadia South of SWAT in 1:39 for the championship.

“Brooklyn wrestled unbelievable,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “She just has to go out and not underestimate herself, and she could become a very good wrestler if she keeps doing what she is doing.”

Freshman Makayla Liska (6-2) placed second at 155 pounds. She had three first-period falls to advance to the finals. She lost to defending state champ Mahri Manz of Lewis Central via pin.

“Makayla wrestled well,” Koenig said. “She lost to a really good competitor.

“I’m happy with the way those three competed, and the other girls are new to the sport at this level. They’re starting to figure it out.”

Two-time state qualifier Mariaha Benedict (8-1) lost in the semifinals at 140 pounds. She bounced back with two first-period falls, giving her four on the day under two minutes.

“Mariah had a tough girl in the semifinals,” Koenig said. “She was one of those darkhorses that came out of nowhere for Logan-Magnolia.

“We just talked about moving forward and using that as motivation.”

J.J. Leyva (120) won two matches. Tristen Holst (130) also picked up a victory for FDSH.

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they compete in the Iowa Central Clash at 10 a.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
