Cougars can’t stop S-F, 14-0
MANSON — The dream season came to an end for ninth-ranked Manson Northwest Webster, but not without a fight.
The Cougars (8-2 overall) fell to Sumner-Fredericksburg (7-3) in Class 1A second round game by a final of 14-0 on Friday night.
“I’m extremely proud of our guys and the season they had,” said third-year MNW head coach Zach Noffsinger. “We knew we had a good team and they showed it.”
The playoff opponents went scoreless through three quarters before S-F got on the board.
S-F scored on a four-yard run with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter and added the two-point conversion.
The last touchdown of the game came on a four-yard plunge from Noah Henderson later in the final frame.
“Our defense has played well all year and played well (Friday) for the most part,” Noffsinger said. “They drove down the field late. We forced three turnovers and that was great for our defense, but we just couldn’t put points on the board.”
It was a banner year for MNW, which won a district championship for the first time since 1994 and a playoff game for the first time since 2013.
Senior running back Kamden Birkey became the single season rushing touchdown leader with 13. Birkey ended his career with the most tackles in the program since 2005, heading into Friday’s game with 139.5.
“Our senior class was great,” Noffsinger said. “I came in when they were sophomores and we knew we had something brewing.
“We knew we could get somewhere with this group.”
