Bears on to quarters
ALGONA — The Bishop Garrigan football team continues to pile up wins, advancing to the eight-player quarterfinals with a 47-12 victory over Riceville here Friday night.
Behind their physical style of play, the Golden Bears (10-0 overall), who have now won 22 straight since a Week 1 loss in 2023 to St. Edmond, advanced to meet Edgewood-Colesburg next Thursday for a return bid to the UNI-Dome. The Vikings (10-0) knocked off Janesville last night, 70-48.
Ethan Marso had two early rushing touchdowns while Trayton Cink added two after the break. The pair combined to rush 25 times for 144 yards, as Tate Foertsch added 77 yards rushing and 105 yards passing.
“The defense played great,” BGHS head coach Marty Wadle said. “The kids came ready to play and really were focused from the start.”
Foertsch found Michael Joyce for back-to-back scores during a key second quarter run by Bishop Garrigan. Foertsch completed 5 of 6, as Owen Murphy caught two passes for 56 and Joyce had his two TDs for 35.
“We were able to start clicking in the second,” Wadle said. “We were physical and played hard. That was the key to it all.”
Late in the fourth, senior Isaac DeLange ran in a score.
On defense, Marso and Andrew Lichter each had seven tackles, Keaton Helleseth recorded six with sack and Drew Muller recovered a fumble. Cink and Joyce both had five tackles.
The Golden Bear defense held Riceville (8-2) to just 161 total yards of offense, including 44 yards rushing. Jack Adams, the quarterback for the Wildcats, had rushed for almost 1,200 yards entering the night, averaging just under 12 per carry with 30 combined TDs.
“I think our defense really gave them trouble with what they were doing,” Wadle said. “We kept their quarterback in the pocket, and when he did get outside a few times, we were able to get some good hits on him.”
