The Iowa Central football team had trouble finishing off drives and couldn’t dig out of a hole against Coffeyville on Saturday night.

In front of a packed crowd inside Dodger Stadium for Homecoming, the Tritons (2-4 overall) gave up a pair of big second-quarter Red Raven touchdowns, and the visitors held on for a 31-20 victory.

In a gauntlet of a 2024 schedule, Coffeyville (4-2) was the fourth opponent Iowa Central has faced currently ranked in the Div. I Top-15. In addition, DuPage is No. 1 in Div. III.

The Tritons struggled maintaining and finishing drives, and they were just 2-for-16 on third down.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities,” said ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto. “We had some chances, but we didn’t take advantage.

“We came in banged up and our margin for error obviously isn’t enough (to overcome the miscues).”

The Tritons had four trips into the red zone, but they came away with only two touchdowns. In the first half, their two trips resulted in a pair of Nolan Gustafson field goals — both from under 30 yards (29 and 20).

Quarterback Chris Arviso found Brec Long early for 51- and 56-yard touchdown to give the Red Ravens a 14-0 lead. Treavis Jones put Coffeyville up 21-6 before halftime with a six-yard scoring jaunt.

Iowa Central forced two fumbles and picked off a pass, but struggled to cash in.

“We are on a learning curve with this schedule and we have some things we still obviously need to work on,” Montalto said.

Triton quarterback Dallas Sauser was 12 of 22 for 159 yards passing. Ty Purdy threw for 95 yards.

The Tritons trimmed their deficit in the third quarter. The NJCAA’s all-purpose yardage leader, Cyncir Bowers, reached paydirt on a two-yard run.

Bowers ran for 60 yards, but Iowa Central only netted 56 on the ground.

Coffeyville’s lone third-quarter points came on a Roan McCarthy 34-yard field goal. Arviso and Long then hooked up again on a 17-yard connection for a 31-13 Red Raven advantage.

Long had 124 yards and the three TDs. Arviso was 11 of 22 for 209 yards.

Sauser added the final points on a 12-yard strike to ICCC teammate Dominck Brown.

“We have to get better week by week,” Montalto said. “We have struggled to get to that next level.

“We have to be ready to go against Ellsworth, then we have a week off and need to turn a corner in November.”

The Tritons are back in action on Saturday against the Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, again inside Dodger Stadium.
