Humboldt wins NCC volleyball crown

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt volleyball team showed their resolve in securing at least a piece of the North Central Conference title.

The Wildcats knocked off Webster City in four by scores of 25-27, 28-26, 25-15 and 25-22.

Humboldt (16-8 overall, 5-0 in league) can claim the championship outright and finish the conference slate unbeaten when they host St. Edmond next Thursday.

“Our girls are playing really strong and I am so proud of them,” Wildcat head coach Ashlyn McKenna said. “We are playing fast and have an incredible defense to start up our offense.”

Junior Mia Schluter and senior Larsen Bonnstetter lead the team in kills while freshman Addie Waldorf and junior Kendall Works both have over 200 assists.

“I’m excited to see what this next week against St. Edmond will bring,” McKenna said, “and having the opportunity to take the NCC outright.”

McKenna, a Humboldt grad herself, is in her second season leading the program. They were co-NCC champions last year alongside Algona and have gone 30-26 overall on the court.

Before taking on St. Edmond, the Wildcats head to Mason City for tournament action this Saturday. Along with the host Riverhawks, Central Springs, Clear Lake, Des Moines Lincoln, Osage, Spencer and Waverly-Shell Rock are in the field.

Humboldt opens regional action at home on Oct. 22 vs. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

Starting at $2.99/week.
