The eighth-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team has a good problem this year.
With a deep roster of talented players, the Tritons can pair off in practice sessions that easily simulate what games will be like.
That showed here Wednesday night as Iowa Central swept Marshalltown inside Hodges Fieldhouse for its sixth consecutive win.
Scores were 25-16, 25-14 and 25-19.
Even down two regular starters, the Tritons (18-3 overall, 6-0 in ICCAC) showed no signs of a letdown, jumping out early on the Tigers (7-12, 0-6).
Emily Goodner and Araya Garrison each recorded seven kills with Dena Robb adding six. Brooke Lensing and Talya Sampson both had five as Iowa Central finished the night with 37 kills, six aces and 16 block assists.
“We’ve always had bigger teams in terms of roster size,” ICCC head coach Sara Horn said. “So that’s always factored into our practice plans. But we definitely have great depth this year so that we really have competitive 6-on-6 sessions.
“I think that helps, especially with two starters out, in that we have seen what these girls can do in practice.”
Dani Anela Kapu had 15 assists while Camryn Stevens recorded 12. Sampson and Olivia Benson each chipped in 11 digs while Goodner added six. Sampson also had three aces and three block assists, with Sturgis registering seven block assists and Lensing four.
“We weren’t nervous at all with the lineup changes,” Horn said. “There was no hesitation and I thought the girls stepped in and did a great job. Camryn really had a nice match even though she was nursing a bit of a shoulder injury herself.”
The Tritons finished off Marshalltown in the first on a 5-0 run with that momentum carrying over into the second set behind Sampson. The freshman from Kansas had three aces and a kill during an eight-point spurt.
Iowa Central has swept all six of its league foes this year with five matches left on the docket. But first, they will head to Boone for the DMACC Invitational to play Bismarck State College, Lincoln Land and 12th-ranked Illinois Central.
“We have a pretty important weekend coming up in terms of what it could mean for pairings down the road,” Horn said. “I feel like we’re making improvements and moving in the right direction.”
