Tritons impressive in home debut
The Iowa Central rugby team swept Southern Nazarine in their home opener last weekend.
The Triton A squad rolled, 39-10. Takudzwa Musingwini had two longer penalty kicks before Jonah Goetsch scored a try, which was converted by Koen Webb.
With about six minutes left in the first half, Webb scored another try and converted it to put Iowa Central up, 20-0.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Triton Caleb Murphy scored and Musingwini converted. Cam Adderley and Etu Lolohea then added tries of their own, and one was converted by Adderley.
“Takudzwa and Koen are a massive 1-2 punch in our backfield,” ICCC head coach Brent Nelson said. “But this was a team win. Caleb Murphy made some bone-crushing hits on defense, and Connor Price really stepped up off the bench. Jay Gaines and Tyler Gast are playing at a high level too.
“Going forward, we really need to be more disciplined. We committed to many penalties. That will come with a more game like atmosphere in practice. I feel like the tight bond these guys have for each other is going to ring true and they will continue to grow together.”
On the B side, the Tritons posted a 24-11 triumph. John Sutton had two tries, with Tanner Costa and Hunter Bagby adding one each.
Iowa Central returns to action on Saturday back at home against Arkansas State. The action begins at 11 a.m. at Crimmins Field.
