St. Edmond hits the road to face Baxter
BAXTER — The St. Edmond football team looks to make it two in a row when they take on Baxter here Friday night.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Seales Sport Complex.
Last week, the Gaels (1-1 overall, 1-0 in district) picked up a 70-14 victory over Collins-Maxwell in their home and league opener, racking up 367 yards of total offense.
St. Edmond started fast, scoring 33 points in the first quarter as senior Klay Baker found the end zone three times. Baker was part of a rushing effort that produced 260 yards and averaged 9.6 yards per carry.
Ethan Swisher, a junior, completed 7 of 9 for 107 yards with two TD strikes to Grant Galles and one to Baker. Galles, also an 11th-grader, caught four passes for 66 yards.
Aaron Hindt made his season debut, averaging over 18 yards per touch.
“It’s been a really good week all around the program,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “Week 1 was a little rough but being able to come back the way we did and play well over four quarters was big for us.
“I feel like our confidence is high and we are right where we want to be.”
The Gael defense forced five turnovers including a fumble recovery for a score by Koleman Hanson and two interceptions by Jakob Koopman. They also held the Spartans to 83 yards rushing.
Swisher has thrown for 244 yards and four TDs on the season, Baker has 127 yards rushing with two TDs and Galles has caught six passes for 165 with three touchdowns. Sam Myer leads the defense with 15 tackles.
Baxter (1-1, 0-1) opened the year with a 58-49 victory over Springville in Week 0 before falling to Coon Rapids-Bayard last Friday, 28-20. The Bolts have shifted returning quarterback Perrin Sulzle to a new position, as the senior has 179 yards receiving and 97 yards rushing with seven TDs.
Eli Dee, a junior, is the new signal-caller, completing 40 of 70 for 438 yards with five scores. Stadan Vansice leads the team with 12 receptions for 190 yards.
“I was surprised they moved Sulzle as he is a tremendous talent,” Dillon said. “But Dee is pretty special too, and is a great player in the secondary that we will have to account for.
“It is going to be a tough football team no question about it.”
Last year, Baxter picked up a 36-34 victory over the Gaels, who had won the previous two meetings all the way back in 2010 and ’11.
