Six unbeatens left in area
It was a mixed bag for Messenger-area teams in Week 2, as six teams remain unbeaten heading into the third week.
Humboldt, Algona, Manson Northwest Webster, Emmetsburg, South Central Calhoun and Bishop Garrigan look for their third straight victories.
The Wildcats (2-0 overall) head to Van Meter (2-0) in a battle of unbeatens.
South Central Calhoun (2-0, 1-0) looks for its second district win at Riverside (1-1, 0-0).
Algona (2-0) will be in their friendly confines as they host Estherville-Lincoln Central (0-2).
Manson Northwest Webster (2-0) wll travel to face unbeaten MVAOCOU (2-0).
Emmetsburg (2-0) will have a tough task on the road against unbeaten Sheldon (2-0). Defending eight-man champion Bishop Garrigan (2-0, 1-0) will have a road contest against North Iowa (0-2, 0-0).
Other highlighted area games this week are Webster CIty (1-1) at North Polk (2-0).
Newell-Fonda (1-1, 1-0) will look to knock off Woodbine (2-0, 1-0).
The lone area matchup is Southeast Valley (1-1) at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (1-1).
Humboldt (2-0) at Van Meter (2-0)
Humboldt squeaked out a 21-18 victory last week against Ballard, while Van Meter cruised past Des Moines Christian 24-0.
In the first meeting between the two school’s a year ago, the Bulldogs picked up a 52-14 win.
The Wildcats will once again try to ride the arm of quarterback Coen Matson. Against the Bombers, Matson threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his scoring strikes were to Keegan Groat. The wide receiver caught four balls for 197 yards and three scores.
On the season Matson has thrown for 445 yards and four scores. Groat has seven catches for 312 yards and four touchdowns.
Against Des Moines Christian quarterback Jay Haley threw for 211 yards and a score to Caleb Moore.
Garrett Cole ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Haley has 362 yards throwing and two touchdown strokes, while Cole has three touchdowns on the year.
Manson NW (2-0) at MVAOCOU (2-0)
Manson Northwest Webster is looking for its first 3-0 start since the 2009-10 season, where they finished 9-2.
The Cougars have wins over Southeast Valley and knocked off Algona 20-8 a week ago.
They will face a fellow unbeaten as they travel to MVAOCOU this week.
The Rams are coming off a 49-13 victory over Missouri Valley.
In their win last week, the Cougars ran for 265 yards. Kamden BIrkey led the charge with 175 and two scores. Logan Moline threw a touchdown pass t0 Broc Patzner.
On the season Birkey has run for 273 yards and three scores.
Last week Luther Cameron led the Rams with 192 yards and four scores.
Caden Schmidt and Peyton Gress both threw a touchdown pass, both caught by Titus Morley.
South Central Calhoun (2-0, 1-0) at Riverside (1-1, 0-0)
After a 68-point week 1 win, Riverside dropped a 42-22 contest to AHSTW.
The Titans, who rolled past Southwest Valley (43-6), are looking for their second straight win over the Bulldogs.
Against the Timberwolves, South Central Calhoun’s Andrew Anderson threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Anderson connected with Garrett Krause and Charlie Nattress for scores.
Cole Higgins had two running scores, while Caleb Juhl and Mike Trott had one each. Higgins ran for 87 yards.
In their loss, Jaxon Gordon ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns for Riverside.
On the season Landyn Schoenrock has 221 yards and two touchdowns, while Gordon has run for 336 and seven scores.
Webster City (1-1) at North Polk (2-0)
The Lynx suffered a 24-14 loss in their home opener to Spencer, while North Polk improved to 2-0 with a 41-27 win over Carlisle.
Last week Jaxon Griffith led the Lynx with 90 yards and a touchdown, while Luke Estlund threw a 17-yard touchdown to Carter Mickelson.
Griffith has ran for 235 yards on the season, while Estlund had 101 and three scores.
The Comets ran for 381 yards in their win over Carlisle.
Nathan Feldmann led North Polk with 234 yards and three touchdowns, including a 92-yard jaunt. BJ Tate Jr. had 138 yards and three scores.
Feldmann has 419 yards and seven scores in two games, while Tate Jr. has 231 and five touchdowns.
Newell-Fonda (1-1, 1-0) at Woodbine (2-0, 1-0)
After giving up 86 points in Week 1, the Newell-Fonda defense only gave up eight points in a 64-8 win over West Harrison/Whiting last week.
Max Carlson ran for 116 yards and three scores, while Gunnar Baron, Trevor Tauber and Landen Kruse each ran for a score.
Carlson threw two touchdown passes, connecting with Jacksyn Hogrefe and Guyson Lyman.
This season Carlson has accounted for 14 touchdowns. He has thrown for eight (509 yards), ran for five (214) and has returned an interception for a score.
Woodbine is coming off a 48-12 win over Boyer Valley. Brody Pryor threw for 137 yards and two scores, while running for four touchdowns.
In the first two games, Boyer has thrown for four scores and ran for six.
Southeast Valley (1-1) at Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (1-1)
After a heartbreaking loss in Week 1, Southeast Valley came back with vengeance. The Jaguars cruised to a 64-0 win over Eagle Grove.
Cale Vansickle threw for 202 yards and two scores, while Casey Hanson also threw a touchdown pass.
Brady Hanson ran for 168 yards and three scores, with a long of 72. Vansickle ran for 84 and two trips to paydirt, while Declan McGuire added a score.
Gauge Jones caught five balls for 158 yards and two scores and Colin Johnson had two TD catches.
Brady Hanson has run for 272 and five scores and Vansickle has three scores.
After a Week 1 win over Eagle Grove (48-8), the Cowboys suffered a 35-7 setback to Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
The lone score for the Cowboys came on a 91-yard kickoff return from Charlie Campbell. The Cowboys struggled offensively, running for 81 yards and throwing for 39.
Estherville-LC (0-2) at Algona (2-0)
Algona’s win last week was over almost before it started. The Bulldogs built a 48-0 lead before Forest City got on the board.
The Indians got second half points from their first unit, as the Algona’s starters were on the bench.
Future Iowa State quarterback Alex Manske accounted for five touchdowns, while Evan Allie scored from three different aspects.
Manske was 10-for-15 passing for 310 yards and four scores and a running touchdown.
William Weichert and Ashton Moreno also had running touchdowns.
Allie caught five balls, two for scores and had 181 yards. He returned an interception 32 yards to paydirt and ran a punt 67 yards for a score.
Tyson VanDeWalle and Tate Slagle also had touchdown catches.
On the season Manske has 477 yards and five touchdowns through the air. He has run for five scores.
Weichert has two touchdowns. Allie and Slagle have two touchdown catches each.
Estherville-Lincoln Central has lost their first two games to OABCIG (47-20) and Emmetsburg (34-0).
On the year Layton Yager has thrown for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Sincere McMuran has 10 grabs for 166 and two scores.
