Birkey puts on a Homecoming show for Manson NW in win
MANSON -- A battering ram of an offensive line plus a steady diet of senior running back Kamden Birkey sent Manson Northwest Webster to a Homecoming victory on Friday night.
The Cougars (3-1 overall, 1-0 in the distirict) earned a Class 1A, District 2 victory with a 28-7 triumph over rival Pocahontas Area (0-4, 0-1) on Friday night.
The visiting Indians made things difficult in the first 24 minutes, taking advantage of a Cougar fumble near midfield and marching for a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Carson Bunda connected with senior wide receiver Gabe Ehn on a crossing pattern to take it inside the 10-yard line.
A play later, freshman running back Logan Shiflett blasted in from two yards out for a 7-0 lead.
MNW responded immediately, going 67 yards on their ensuing possession. Birkey covered the final 10 and into the end zone. The two-point conversion failed, keeping the visitors up 7-6 -- a lead they took into halftime.
"We started slow," MNW head coach Zach Noffsinger said. "We had some execution errors and Pocahontas Area took advantage of them.
"When we went in for halftime, our guys knew it was time to step up. They were already talking about it when we got in the locker room. It's great to see them hold themselves accountable."
Birkey added his second and third rushing touchdowns of the night in the second half, with one coming from seven yards and the other from two to help highlight a 30-carry, 133-yard evening.
Manson Northwest Webster's passing attack also got in on the act during a 22-point burst over the final two frames.
The senior combination of quarterback Logan Moline and Broc Patzner connected on a 16-yard scoring strike, part of Moline's 115 yards.
Fellow senior wide receiver Matt Condon, who added Homecoming King accolades to his resume on Friday, hauled in 99 of those yards on seven catches.
"I think our team now knows we need to be ready from the start," Noffinsger noted in looking ahead at continued district competition this Friday at Eagle Grove. "Each game will present a challenge."
Pocahontas Area was topped by Bunda's 91 passing yards. Ehn had catches for 59 yards.
Shiflett carried the ball 11 times for 71 yards to top the rushing attack.
The Indians are back in action this Friday, welcoming East Sac County for their Homecoming tilt.
Record night for Cink
NORTHWOOD -- It was a record breaking night for Bishop Garrigan's Trayton CInk on Friday night.
The top-ranked Golden Bear (4-0 overall, 3-0 district) junior ran for a school record six touchdowns in a 74-6 win over Northwood-Kensett (0-4, 0-3).
Cink had scoring jaunts of 40, 25, 22, 17, 17 and five. He racked up 187 yards on 14 carries. He now has 13 touchdowns on the season.
Quarterback Tate Foertsch threw a touchdown pass and ran one in. Foertsch connected with Wyatt Rosenmeyer from eight yards out. Foertsch also had a 28-yard scoring run.
Kyle Bormann had an eight-yard touchdown jaunt and Isaac DeLange returned an interception 19 yards to paydirt.
The Golden Bears had 396 yards of total offense, 292 coming on the ground.
Matt Besch was the leading tackler with seven. Madden Miller had five, while Carter Schwab and Ethan Marso had five each.
Jaguars fall to DM Christian
GOWRIE -- Southeast Valley didn't have an answer for Des Moines Christians early burst on Friday night.
The Lions (3-1 overall, 1-0 district) scored the first 20 points and never looked back in a 33-6 victory over the Jaguars (2-2, 0-1).
Cale Vansickle had the lone touchdown for Southeast Valley, scoring from one-yard out. Vansickle finished with 31 yards on 17 carries.
The Jaguars had 212 yards of total offense, while the Lions accumulated 325.
Wildcats fall short vs. Comets
HUMBOLDT -- Humboldt nearly pulled off another upset this week, but came up short at home.
The fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Wildcats (3-1 overall) dropped a 26-17 decision to third-ranked (4A) North Polk (4-0) on Friday night.
This was the final tune up before district play begins next week for Class 3A.
The Wildcats were coming off a 28-21 victory over three-time defending state champions Van Meter, who also had won 26 consecutive games.
Quarterback Coen Matson threw two touchdown passes, both to Chase Flaherty. Karson Rubel had a 30-yard field goal.

Bulldogs earn shutout, 35-0
ALGONA -- The top-ranked (Class 3A) Algona football team posted a 35-0 victory over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley here Friday night on Homecoming.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 28-0 lead at the half, as Alex Manske tossed three touchdown passes.
Manske has 10 touchdown passes this season.
Tate Slagle had a receiving score and added an interception return for a touchdown.
