GOWRIE — A Hollywood scriptwriter would have had a hard time replicating the final, frenetic seconds of Manson Northwest Webster’s victory here on Friday.

Trailing Southeast Valley 26-22 with seven seconds remaining, head coach Zach Noffsinger’s Cougars were 27 yards from paydirt.

Senior quarterback Logan Moline attempted a long pass but the Southeast Valley defense caught his arm and knocked the ball away.

After Moline relayed to the coaching staff that his arm was dinged up, Matt Condon got the call.

Condon already came up in the clutch for the Cougars earlier on an 87-yard touchdown run. As the back-up signal caller, Condon took the final snap a and hoisted a ball into the air that found the hands of sophomore Coy Moline at the 1-yard line. Moline pushed across the goal line for the dramatic conclusion in a 28-26 MNW win.

“I just went up for it,” Moline said. “My brother was hurt, so Matt had to step in. We just told him in the huddle to get it toward the end zone and we would find a way to (score).

“We were determined to come in here and play well.”

Condon celebrated with his teammates after the win.

“What a finish,” Condon said. “I didn’t even have time to get my gloves off.

“I just took the snap and put the ball up.”

Cougar head coach Zach Noffsinger was excited for his players after the thrilling finish.

“This is a great way to start the season,” Noffsinger said. “We have so much respect for what (SV head) Coach (Mike) Swieter and his staff have done here. They’ve built a strong program.

“For us to come here and get a win like this shows a lot of determination and resilience from our guys. It was back and forth all night — an exciting game to be a part of.”

Condon ended with 90 yards rushing on three carries.

Senior running back Kadon Birkey tallied 87 rushing yards, including a 71-yard scoring run to put the visitors up early. He bounced off a Southeast Valley defender on the ground and into the the end zone.

Logan Moline threw for 123 yards and rushed for 26.

Southeast Valley’s two-headed attack of senior quarterback Cale Van Sickel (102 rushing yards) and senior running back Brady Hanson (103) put up over 100 yards each on the ground.

Van Sickel also got the Jaguars passing game going with 121 yards through the air.

“It’s tough way to end it,” Swieter said. “Our guys kept themselves in this throughout despite some struggles from time to time.

“We just need to move forward and find out who can step up for us in different situations.”
