Former Iowa Central Community College standout Dylan Travis is headed to Paris.

Travis will compete for the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics later this month. He will be part of the first-ever U.S. Olympic 3×3 men’s basketball team.

Joining Travis will be former Brigham Young University standout Jimmer Fredette, Canyon Barry and Kareem Maddox. The quartet have been playing together for the past year. They’d been selected in March by USA Basketball.

“It doesn’t seem too long ago I was in Omaha (where Travis played high school ball) with zero D1 offers in high school, and was on my ‘Last Chance U’ grind at Iowa Central,” Travis told the Florida Southern University website recently. “I’m happy I stayed with my dream and goal and persevered through some tough times.”

The Olympics begin July 24 and conclude Aug. 11, with 3×3 basketball beginning July 30. Travis and his teammates will play Serbia that day followed, by games vs. Poland on July 31 and Lithuania on Aug. 1.

On Aug. 2, the U.S. faces both France and China, before finishing pool play two days later vs. the Netherlands.

The semifinals and medal games begin on Aug. 5.

“There is no better feeling or honor (to represent the country on the world stage),” Travis said. “I can’t even put it in words the emotion you feel when you have those letters across your chest. It comes with a great sense of pride and responsibility.

“Gold medals are the expectation when you are from the United States in any competition.”

Travis attended Iowa Central in 2013 after a season at NAIA Midland. He averaged over 18 points per game, then transferred to Div. II Florida Southern in 2014.

After two productive seasons that included helping Florida Southern win a national title in 2015 as the leading scorer, Travis played professionally for four years before retiring from basketball. He return to the court in 3-on-3 style.

Travis won a national title in 3Ball in 2021, and advanced to the finals again a year later. Travis was also part of the gold medal winning team at the 2022 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup.

“I played for Hall of Fame coach Dennis Pilcher and his assistants, Chad Helle and Nathan West,” Travis said. “These coaches helped me on and off the court, and I had numerous offers after one year (in Fort Dodge), before signing with Florida Southern.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
