Hayden Derrig and JT Laufersweiler put together senior seasons to remember, complete with earning all-North Central Conference baseball honors.
Derrig was tabbed unanimous first team, while Laufersweiler made the second squad for St. Edmond.
Algona’s Aiden Ulrich and Tate Slagle, Webster City’s Jaxon Griffith and Keegan Hisler, and Humboldt’s Evan Hatcher were other unanimous picks by the league coaches.
Rounding out the first team were Carson Nesheim of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Isaiah Busick and Corey Dettmann from Humboldt, Webster City’s Josh Stansfield and Algona’s Logan Lentz.
“Hayden and JT were very deserving selections,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “I felt like the coaches did a tremendous job in determining the all-NCC teams this year. They were very balanced and rewarded the right players.”
Derrig, who is headed to Central College to play baseball in the fall, recorded 45 strikeouts in league games, which placed him fifth overall. He had a 2-3 record while also recording 13 hits with nine runs, 11 steals and five RBI.
“From the first game he pitched, you could tell Hayden put in a lot of time this offseason,” Szalat said. “It’s great to see someone who worked so hard get rewarded like he did for his effort.”
Laufersweiler hit .343 with a .452 on-base in conference games, driving in six with nine runs scored and seven walks. He also stole seven bases and struck out 13.
“JT raised his batting average by almost 100 points,” Szalat said. “I’m not sure I saw that coming. He was our vocal leader and just a tremendous kid.
“Both of those guys will be missed by our program.”
Slagle, a junior who has committed to the University of Iowa, helped Algona claim the regular season title. He led the NCC with three home runs, 22 runs scored, 23 hits and 24 RBI while his .535 average ranked second.
As a pitcher, Slagle had a league-leading .086 batting average against with with five runners thrown out trying to steal.
Ulrich, also a junior, was second behind Slagle with 22 runs driven in. He also had five NCC victories on the mound.
Hisler, a senior, was third with a .472 average while Griffith, a sophomore, led the league with 22 steals.
Busick picked up four wins as a junior on the mound and was fourth with 47 strikeouts. Dettmann, a senior, tied with Slagle with seven doubles.
Hatcher, a senior, tied with Slagle and Griffith with two triples.
