Gaels begin postseason trek
The fourth-ranked St. Edmond softball team secured their first postseason victory of the season without even stepping on the diamond.
Due to a forfeit by Northwood-Kensett this past Wednesday, the Gaels moved into the Class 1A, Region 2 semifinals where they will now meet Bishop Garrigan here Friday night at Rogers Park.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
St. Edmond (22-5 overall) ended its state drought last summer, knocking off Newell-Fonda in a regional final to advance. They put together a perfect North Central Conference run to secure a second consecutive outright league title and enter on a 10-game win streak.
Mariah Myers, a junior who has committed to the University of Iowa, is third among all five classes in the state in hitting with a .641 average. She broke the single-season home run record, hitting 13, as the Gaels broke the single-season team mark for homers with 25.
Myers also has scored 40 runs with 13 doubles, 22 walks and 19 steals.
Faith Shirbroun has a team-leading 45 runs scored with nine doubles, seven homers and 26 RBI while stealing 34 bases, and Lauren Gibb has a team-best 42 steals with 36 runs, 33 hits, seven doubles, four triples and 20 RBI.
Myers and Gibb have yet to strikeout in a combined 150 official at-bats.
Kaili Henning, the lone senior in the lineup, is hitting .391 with 33 RBI, 10 doubles and two homers while going 14-2 inside the circle with 138 strikeouts in just under 99 innings pitched.
Bishop Garrigan (17-7) had no problems with North Iowa, advancing behind a seven-run fourth inning, 9-1. The Golden Bears are led by senior Abbie Capesius, who was part of the back-to-back state basketball championship teams.
Capesius is hitting over .500 and leads Garrigan in home runs, RBI, hits and runs scored. She connected on her 13th homer of the season in the win over North Iowa.
Both Hanna Merron and Zoe Montag are batting over .400 while Ella Schaaf is the ace of the staff with over 100 strikeouts on the year.
The bottom side of the bracket includes No. 10 Mason City Newman and Saint Ansgar, who both have over 20 wins on the year.
