Lucy Porter shined bright inside the circle here Monday evening for the fourth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team.
Porter, a junior who has committed to Minnesota State University, held powerful No. 14 (5A) Des Moines Lincoln to just six hits and struck out a career-high 13 in a 3-0 victory in the opener at Rogers Park.
In the nightcap, three home runs helped lift the Dodgers to a 10-7 win.
“What a performance for Lucy,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “She was amazing out there. Our girls came prepared and ready to play.”
Ashlyn Wills had a double and drove in a run in the opener, while Macy Brown also had an RBI for the Dodgers (28-9 overall). Ellie Doster, who has six hits in her last seven at-bats, was 3-for-3.
The Railsplitters entered the doubleheader hitting .359 with 91 extra-base hits as a squad, having struck out just 79 times in 33 games.
Porter had them guessing all evening, though, recording the final out of each inning by strikeout. She has not allowed a run in 14 consecutive innings.
“Lincoln is a great team with an excellent tradition,” Adams said. “They have some outstanding players, so for Lucy to do that to them, it really speaks to the level she is pitching at right now.”
Holding a slim 1-0 lead in the fourth, Wills doubled in Hope Alstott with a blast to center and Brown followed with a bunt that brought in Ava Wessels, who also scored the first run of the game all the way from second on a passed ball.
Lincoln had won three of four, including a split vs. No. 9 (5A) Des Moines Roosevelt.
The offenses exploded for 12 runs in the first two innings of the nightcap before the Dodgers plated four unanswered and held on from there. Meah McCaleb, Porter and Doster all hit home runs.
Fort Dodge entered the night with only four homers as a team all season long.
Hope Alstott was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, an RBI and two steals, McCaleb had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, and Doster finished with two hits and drove in three.
All nine Dodgers recorded at least a hit, with six scoring runs and seven driving in a at least one.
“We just came out and hit the ball hard,” Adams said. “These girls have been in some difficult situations this year, but they continue to listen to the coaches and work hard.”
Aubrey Alstott earned the win inside the circle, with Porter coming on to record the final four outs for a save, striking out three.
Fort Dodge hosts Ankeny Centennial back at Rogers Park Wednesday night in the home regular season finale.
