Myers blasts three HRs

Mariah Myers is locked in at the plate right now for the St. Edmond softball team.

Myers, a junior who has committed to the University of Iowa, hit three home runs as the sixth-ranked (Class 1A) Gaels topped Iowa Falls-Alden here Wednesday night at Rogers Park, 12-1 in five innings.

She has now hit four homers this week and nine on the season as St. Edmond (14-5 overall, 8-0 in North Central Conference) won its seventh straight over the Cadets (4-9, 3-5).

Toryn Helle added a triple and a double with two RBI while Kaili Henning allowed just four hits over four innings with seven strikeouts for her 10th won of the season.

“Mariah is just a special, special kid,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “I’ve coached her at so many different levels along the way and what she brings to a program is incredible. I really hope everyone that watches her understands the talent she has.”

Heavy rains in Iowa Falls moved the game to Rogers Park with the Gaels serving as the visiting team. After a single by Faith Shirbroun, Myers sent the second pitch she saw screaming down the left field line, with the ball bouncing off the pole and into a lap of a spectator.

In the third, she connected on a 1-1 pitch over the fence in center for a solo shot as part of a five-run inning for St. Edmond. Helle had a two-RBI double as the Gaels took advantage of three walked batters an an error.

“What I was really happy about was the intensity we played with and showed,” Shirbroun said. “In the past, we’d come out in games like this after a big win and kind of just go through the motions. There was none of that.

“We’ve been working to be this kind of team and I’m happy with where we are right now.”

Shirbroun, Henning, Payton Bradley and Sophia Schlienz each had two hits with Schlienz driving in a run and scoring. Lauren Gibb stole three bases and scored twice, Bradley crossed home twice and Myrah Lemon had two runs scored and a stolen base.

St. Edmond returns to action Thursday night when they host Saydel.
