After Koy Davidson made his college visit, he knew exactly where he wanted to be.
The Fort Dodge senior-to-be made a visit to Oregon State and after the trip, it was evident to Davidson that’s where he should be.
“My visit went really well,” Davidson said. “They have everything for me to get better and succeed.
“It’s the right place to be and take me to the next level.”
Davidson had a chance to talk to the coaches and wrestlers and thought the fit was perfect.
“I talked to the wrestlers and coaches and I saw what they’re all about,” Davidson said. “It’s really cool there and I got to see how the facilities were.
“I like the way they run the program.”
There was only one other school on Davidson’s list and that was South Dakota State.
“It was up to me to make my decision and I feel this is the right place for me,” Davidson said. “It’s a good opportunity to get out of Iowa and get a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
With one season left on the high school match, Davidson will look to graduate as a two-time state champion after winning a state title as a junior.
Davidson’s championship match against Carter Freeman of Waukee Northwest, a University of Northern Iowa recruit, will go down as one of the most electric championships in recent memory.
Freeman was looking to become the 34th fourth-time state champion, but Davidson’s will for his first propelled him to the top.
After a 1-1 tie through regulation after escape points for each. The rivals got into a flurry of scrambles as time began to run out in overtime. They circled in an upper-body tie-up to their feet.
Davidson (42-2) got control and tossed Freeman to the mat. The Dodger standout then stepped over with Freeman on his back to clinch the state title and a 6-1 victory to become Fort Dodge’s 64th state champion all-time. Fort Dodge ended the night with 66 state champions.
With the magnitude of the match and what was on the line for Freeman, Davidson was named the IHSSN Tournament MVP for his efforts.
Davidson will enter his senior season with a career mark of 108-16 and is 28th on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list. He is also a state runner up and fourth place medalist.
“It’s nice having it off of my shoulders,” Davidson said. “I can focus on my final year of high school and hopefully go out and get my second title.
“Then I can start my new life and next chapter down in Oregon.”
Davidson knows he wouldn’t be in this position without the people around him.
“I want to give a big thanks to TJ Sebolt for being a big influence on my wrestling,” Davidson said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without him and I wouldn’t be in the position that I’m in. Without my parents I wouldn’t be where I am at. They spent a lot of money to help me and are always there for me.
“My high school coaches have also helped me to get where I am.”
