Gaels split at Waukee Northwest

WAUKEE — Bill Shirbroun knows what his fifth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team can do against schools their own size.

The real test has occurred this week.

The Gaels (12-3 overall) are playing in the ultra-competitive Waukee Norwest tournament. On Friday, they knocked off seventh-ranked (4A) Bondurant-Farrar (16-6), 7-1, after losing 10-1 to No. 2 (5A) Waukee Northwest.

“We played good defense and scored early to take the pressure off (against B-F),” Shirbroun said. “We got the lead and were able to finish.

Against the Bluejays, the Gaels had nine hits.

Senior Kaili Henning (8-2) earned the pitching win. Henning allowed only two hits, while striking out four.

Sisters Ansley Oswald and Hadley Oswald went a combined 4-for-8. Hadley drove in a run.

Faith Shirbroun, Henning and Toryn Helle all had doubles. Henning and Helle drove in two each, while Lauren Gibb had an RBI.

Shirbroun, Myrah Lemon and Gibb scored two runs each in the victory.

Gibb had a double against the Wolves, while Mariah Myers and Helle had the other two. Myers drove in the lone run.

“We put the ball in play and moved the ball around with some timely hits,” Shirbroun said. “We had some big hits that kept the momentum with us.”

The Wolves had 13 hits in the contest, six of which were for extra bases.

“They are one of the top teams in 5A,” Shirbroun said. “We knew we had to be able to locate our pitches and we didn’t.

“This is a good experience for us. It’s fun to play high end competition. It challenges us to get better.”

The Gaels, who also squared off with Top-10 opponents Van Meter (2A) and North Polk (4A) in the last week alone, return on Saturday to face Urbandale at 12:30 p.m. and Linn-Mar at 2 p.m.
