Gaels drop a pair to 5A foes
WAUKEE — The fifth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team finished up play here Saturday in the Waukee Northwest Tournament vs. a pair of 5A programs.
The Gaels fell to Urbandale, 9-2, and Linn-Mar, 3-0.
Ansley Oswald had a triple and drove in a run vs. the J-Hawks while Mariah Myers recorded a double and scored a run. Sophia Schlienz also scored a run and Kaili Henning had an RBI.
Faith Shirbroun, Lauren Gibb and Henning each recorded a hit with Shirbroun stealing a base.
Eighth-grader Toryn Helle struck out four and allowed just seven hits with two earned runs vs. Linn-Mar. Myers had two doubles.
Schlienz and Hadley Oswald each added a hit. Gibb stole a base.
“We really battled against Linn-Mar,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We knew this would be a difficult tournament but the girls never gave in and fought throughout the four games. We learned a lot about ourselves against four very good programs.”
St. Edmond returns to action Monday when they host Webster City at Rogers Park in a meeting of co-North Central Conference leaders.
