FD baseball team sweeps

After a disappointing night at Ottumwa the day before, the Dodger baseball team came back strong on Thursday.

Fort Dodge (8-7 overall) rode a Tanner Peterson no-hitter in a 16-1 opener, then closed out the sweep of Marshalltown with a 13-1 victory.

Peterson, a freshman, struck out three batters and allowed zero earned runs.

Fort Dodge pounded out 16 hits.

“Tanner did a great job on the mound,” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “I don’t care how many innings you pitch, anytime you throw a no-hitter it’s impressive. We have been making some nervous errors over the past couple of days.

“It’s part of a young team and we just have to get the experience.”

Senior Jace Johnson and junior Rylan Kingrey had big nights at the plate, with three hits each. Kingrey tallied two doubles and a triple, while Johnson recorded a double and a triple.

Kingrey drove in five and Johnson had four RBI.

“I thought Jace Johnson had a great game in the opener especially and Rylan had a great night,” Utley said. “They both did well at the plate and took advantage of the pitching while fighting the wind.”

Freshman Tru McBride had two hits and an RBI. Freshman Cal Pederson and Peterson finished with two RBI and sophomore Caiden Fraher had one.

In the nightcap, Fort Dodge had six hits. Sophomore Dalton Eckley was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Freshman Davis Underberg drove in a run, and senior Landen Hout had two RBI.

Sophomore Jaxson Dencklau chipped in a double.

Freshman Will McElroy picked up the win on the mound, allowing five hits, zero earned runs and striking out seven.

“In Game 2, Will looked good on the mound from when he started through the final out,” Utley said. “We hit the ball hard and it was an opportunity to have some fun.”

Fort Dodge is back in action on Friday against Sioux City North at Rogers Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
