Dodgers win opener before rains hit

The Fort Dodge baseball team rode a strong pitching performance from freshman Tru McBride and a four-run fifth inning past Des Moines Lincoln, 6-1, in an Iowa Alliance Conference cross-over game at Ed McNeil Field Wednesday night.

The Dodgers, now 10-10, were hoping for a sweep, but the second game was delayed by lightning and rain and was just starting up again at 9:45 last night.

In the opener, McBride scattered five hits and worked six innings. Rylan Kingrey worked the seventh for the Dodgers, allowing one hit, but he finished the frame when catcher Bo Marsh threw out a runner at third base to end the game.

McBride fanned six batters and kept Lincoln out in front of pitches most of the evening, leading to nine fly-ball outs.

Jaxson Dencklau, Karch Smith and Royce Pederson had two hits each for the Dodgers, who finished with nine hits in the opener. Both of Pederson’s hits were doubles.

Smith finished with three RBI, driving home a run in the first by scoring Dencklau. Smith also had a two-run single in the fifth when the Dodgers plated four runs.

McBride had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Pederson added an RBI double in the fifth as well. Fort Dodge took advantage of two hit batters and a Lincoln error in the inning.

McBride worked out of several jams. He left two runners on in the first, and got out of a base-loaded game in the sixth when Lincoln scored its only run. Marsh also threw out a runner at third base in the sixth as well.

In the nightcap, the game was tied at 2 when lightning hit in the bottom of the third. After the rains came through, the teams waited out more lightning before starting to clear the tarps off the field and resuming play.

Fort Dodge trailed 2-0 after the top of the second, but knotted the game in the bottom of the frame. Tanner Peterson drove home a run, and Kingrey reached on a base-loaded walk to force in the second.

Lincoln scored in the top of the first on three Dodger errors. Mike Estes drove home the other run with a single in the second.

After dropping three straight, the Dodgers have now won back-to-back games. They rallied for a 6-3 win over Ames in the second game of a twinbill Monday night.

Fort Dodge is back on the field Thursday at Waterloo East in an Iowa Alliance Conference Northern Division doubleheader. The first game starts at 5 p.m.
