Hayden Derrig reset his own strikeout mark and the St. Edmond baseball team moved to 2-0 with a convincing 9-1 victory over Manson Northwest Webster here Thursday night at Rogers Park.

Derrig, who struck out 15 last week in the opener, recorded 16 strikeouts and allowed just two hits with two walks. He also was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, three runs scored and two steals.

“Hayden is just locked in right now,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “He’s hitting his spots and working at his pace. It was also great to see him swing the bat like that.”

The Gaels (2-0 overall) took advantage of 12 free bases by way of walk or hit-by-pitch. Grant Galles reached base three times, scoring two runs while stealing three bases.

Both JT Laufersweiler and Ethan Swisher drove in a pair.

Derrig got the ball rolling in the first, as he singled, stole second and scored on an error. Derrig and Laufersweiler — the lone seniors on the roster — both scored in the third, with St. Edmond adding two runs in the fifth and four more in the fifth.

“We’re still working to get better at the plate,” Szalat said. “But I thought we did a better job compared to last week. We were patient again.

“JT did a great job in the two-hole and Ethan had a big two-RBI hit there in the fifth.”

For the Cougars (0-3), Caydin Anderson struck out 10 over five innings while Dawson Marine and Brody Proctor both had a hit. MNW’s Drew Tincher reached in the sixth and scored the lone run after stealing second.

“(Anderson) is a good pitcher and we had some trouble with him,” Szalat said. “I thought our kids did a nice job of adjusting as the game went on.”

Max Webster reached base three times with a steal for St. Edmond in the victory. Koleman Hanson also reached three times and scored a run, and Jack McElroy had a steal.

Over two starts, Derrig has thrown 14 innings with 31 strikeouts, six walks and just three hits allowed. He struck out the side in the fifth and sixth, recording at least two strikeouts in the other five innings.

St. Edmond is off until Tuesday, when the Gaels travel to Southeast Valley. Manson Northwest Webster heads to East Sac County Friday night.
