Dodgers sweep Des Moines North

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge baseball team didn’t show any struggles from a late night on the diamond the day before.

Fort Dodge made quick work of Des Moines North here on Wednesday, knocking off the Polar Bears in a pair of five-inning contests, 15-1 and 15-4.

The Dodgers (3-0 overall) had edged Hampton-Dumont in 11 innings on Tuesday night, with the contest finishing at 10:30 p.m.

“After coming off a long night, we started a little slow,” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “We had good swings and made plays.”

In the opener, the Dodgers had 11 hits and rode a two-hitter from junior Jase Nekvinda. Sophomore Dalton Eckley had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.

Sophomore Jaxson Dencklau had two hits and drove in a run, while freshman Tru McBride was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

Nekvinda struck out eight batters, allowing just two hits.

“It was nice to get Jase on the mound,” Utley said. “We also got to see some new faces pitching.

“It was fun to get the freshmen out there and gain confidence and experience.”

In the nightcap, Denkclau had another big effort, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Kolton Schiltz was 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Junior Rylan Kingrey had two hits, including a triple.

Seniors Jace Johnson and Landen Hout both drove in two runs. Hout and freshman Tanner Peterson both had doubles.

Fort Dodge was a menace on the base paths, swiping 14 bases in all. Schiltz had four, while Dencklau and freshman Davis Underberg added two each.

Tanner Peterson picked up the win with five strikeouts in the nightcap.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Waterloo East in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on Ed McNeil Field.
