Gaels earn gold in 4×800

WAVERLY — The St. Edmond 4×800 team grabbed a gold medal at the Wartburg Indoor Classic on Tuesday.

The Gaels also finished fifth in the all-class meet. The Gaels accumulated 33 team points.

Dowling (96) was the team champion, followed by Gilbert (58), LaPorte City Union (49) and Iowa City Liberty (44).

The team of Michaela Leiting, Ellie Knox, Hannah Landwehr and Anna Lursen finished in 10:18.57.

“This is the same four as last year,” said St. Edmond head coach CJ Tracy. “They’re five seconds off of their qualifying time where they were at last year.

“It’s a good place to start this year.”

Mariah Myers and Anna Lursen both earned silver medals. Myers was runner up in the shot put with a throw of 35-09.

“Mariah threw at Northern Iowa and Iowa State,” Tracy said. “It wasn’t her best throw, but she had a good throw in the finals to earn a second place showing.”

Lursen was second in the 800 (2:28.51). Lursen was also fourth in the 400 (1:02.40).

“Anna didn’t have a lot of rest between the 400 and the 800,” Tracy said. “But she turned in good times and was behind the state champion in the 800.

“I’m really pleased with our overall team accomplishment as a whole.”

The 4×400 team of Knox, Sasha Hess, Landwehr and Leiting were seventh (4:32.50).
