DES MOINES — Emmetsburg advanced three into the quarterfinals after Day 1 action of the Class 1A state wrestling tournament.
Third-seed Jace Nelson-Brown (175), second seed Gage Jorgenson (285) and sixth-seeded Justin Wirtz (165) all advanced with second-round victories on Wednesday.
Nelson-Brown (36-4), a two-time medalist who was a runner-up here last winter, pinned Will Atichison of Iowa City Regina in 4:50.
Nelson-Brown’s next foe will be No. 6 Zach Robbins (36-4) of Treynor.
Jorgenson (26-4) knocked off Lisbon’s Jonah Reiling in 5:26. Jorgenson will face No. 6 Logan Wright (32-3) of West Branch.
Wirtz (39-2), a two-time qualifier, won a tight 3-1 decision over South Winneshiek’s Kyle Kuboushek.
Up next for Wirtz is third-rated Ryan Stiles (37-6) of Earlham.
Ryan Wirtz (190), the No. 6 seed and a two-time state qualifier, lost his first match by fall to Iowa Valley’s Taite Peach in 5:37.
Wirtz (35-6) will face No. 21 Dominic Marco (27-13) of Sibley-Ocheyedan.
Nick Saxton (215) fell to Emmitt Fleshman (49-8) of Alburnett in one minute. Saxton (33-13) has a match against No. 6 Wyatt Hanna (44-6) of Lake Mills.
St. Edmond
Sam Myer’s second straight state trip didn’t go exactly how he planned, as he lost in his 138-pound opener on Thursday.
Myer (27-14), who won a match at state last season, dropped his opener to 11th-seed Caleb Cook (43-5) of Pleasantville. Myer, the No. 22 seed, fell 9-3.
The next opponent for Myer will be Wapello senior Zach Harbison (30-6).
East Sac County
Two-time state medalist Charlie Veit (144) will compete in the quarterfinals for the Raiders.
Veit, a junior with a 42-3 mark, pinned Auron Marsh of West Branch in 1:45.
Veit (43-3) will now have second-seed Boden White (43-2) of Denver.
Senior Bradyn Burns, the 11th seed, won his first match over Missouri Valley’s Owen Becerra in 3:07. He then lost to No. 6 Ryan Groom (46-3) of North Mahaska by a 17-2 score.
Burns (46-13) will next have No. 21 Jackson Colsch (27-14) of Hudson.
Pocahontas Area
Indian sophomore William Lawson (40-8), the 18th seed at 150 pounds, beat No. 15 Ruger Kincaid (32-16) of Baxter in 31 seconds.
Lawson then lost to Treynor’s second-seeded Danny Kinsella (37-4) by fall in 3:23.
Lawson next has No. 16 Alex Tiedemann (32-10) of Northwood-Kensett.
South Central Calhoun
Eighth-seed senior Brock Nattress (150), a two-time state qualifier, lost his opener to Carter Metcalf (42-6) of Pleasantville by a final of 11-6.
Nattress (48-6) now has No. 23 Isaac Messamaker (37-14) of Moravia.
Teammate Naylan Gulbranson (165) fell to Bode Stanley (35-9) of Interstate 35 in 1:30.
Gulbranson (27-18) has No. 10 Tate Bieret (32-9) of Carroll Kuemper.
West Bend-Mallard
Senior Logan Grimm (165), the 17th seed, fell to Saint Ansgar’s Regan Witt (40-10), 5:19.
Grimm’s (33-6) next foe is No. 15 Hunter Sauer (42-13) of Alburnett.
Sophomore Mason Knapp (113) lost to Preston Province (15-12) of West Sioux in 1:21.
Next for Knapp (37-7) is No. 14 Brayden Maeder (37-9) of Southwest Valley.
