Dodgers primed for state duals
CORALVILLE — There is no question what the plan for Fort Dodge is during the state dual tournament.
The fourth-seeded Dodgers (10-2) will take part in their second straight dual tournament and sixth of the last seven years.
Fort Dodge will face a familiar face in No. 5 Ankeny Centennial.
“I’m pretty sure there are 56 other teams that would love to be in our boat,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “That is a compliment to our tradition and the kids as well as our community with the resources to do what we do.”
State duals have been a tough event to prepare for, but this time around the Dodgers know what they want.
“The guys are ready to come down here and have some fun and compete,” said Thompson who has 191 career dual victories. “This should be a good experience.
“The slippery side of state duals is that it could have an outcome on seeding for traditional. But with Centennial we will come out and compete hard and then assess what we have if it’s against Southeast Polk. Then we will be in the spot where we can bring home a trophy.”
The Dodgers were seventh in state duals and after a throttling of No. 22 Waukee in the regional duals, Thompson is glad that the Dodgers will be competing and not have a two-week break before traditional state.
“Practices seem to get long as the season goes, so being out there competing and not taking a long break is key,” Thompson said. “We try to limit our practices to a sharp hour or hour and a half. We want to keep fresh as the season goes on.”
Centennial and Fort Dodge have met at the Don Miller Invitational and the Ed Winger Classic.
In Fort Dodge the two teams met seven times, with the Dodgers coming away with four victories.
Third-ranked Dru Ayala (33-2) won a tight 1-0 decision over fourth-ranked Cody Vandermark at 120 pounds.
Second-ranked Koy Davidson (33-2) pinned Tyler Brennan at 126 pounds.
Rylee Brown and Hunter Richardson suffered losses to Max Dhabolt (144) and Jackson Anonson (150).
Jesse Egli pinned Jacob Hand (157), while Bo Cowell (167) lost in SV-1. Seventh-ranked Luke Fierke (27-8) won the head-to-head with Rogelio Gonzales at 285 pounds.
At the Ed Winger Classic in Urbandale, the Dodgers won all four matchups. Freshman Trace Rial earned a major decision.
Ayla, who is seventh on FDSH’s all-time win list with 144 victories, dominated Vandermark, 17-5.
Ayla is one of four Dodgers in the 100-win club. Second-ranked (32-4 at 175) Damarion Ross (131) is tied for 10th, Cal Hartman (28-9 at 190) is tied for 22nd (110) and Koy Davidson (33-2) as 100 career victories.
Senior, eighth-ranked Kane Butrick (29-6) pinned Andrew Roland and top-ranked Dreshaun Ross (36-0) had a tech fall over Mitchell Grider.
The Dodgers have won eight of the 11 head-to-head competitions.
“We’ve seen them in the Don Miller Invitational and the Ed Winger Classic,” Thompson said. “We have seen them a lot through the years and they have some Fort Dodge ties with the Bruhls.
“They have the luxury of more guys, so they can bring some extras. It will be a good and close dual.”
Also ranked for the Dodgers is No. 11 Sam Davidson (126).
Along with Vandermark, ranked for Centennial is Cale Vandermark (No. 4 at 113), Maximus Dhabolt (No. 3 at 144), Isaac Bruhl (No. 5 at 157), Ari Ehlts (No. 6 at 165), and Grider is 10th at 215.
Bruhl is the son of Fort Dodge state champion Brad Bruhl.
With traditionals two weeks away, this gives the entire team one last chance to compete together.
“It’s a great opportunity for everyone to compete at the state level,” Thompson said. “Everyone that is in our stable will have a chance to go down and be a part of it.
“This will give everyone some experience and they can use that to help elevate them next season.”
