Behind another gold medal performance by Malyn Davis, the Algona girls secured a third place finish here Friday night at the Fort Dodge Invitational.

Davis, a junior, repeated as an individual champion, with the Bulldogs scoring a second, three thirds and two fourths.

Humboldt was fourth with Emmetsburg finishing 11th and Eagle Grove in a tie for 14th overall. Decorah was crowned team champions with Spencer placing second.

Davis, one of a handful of athletes back after winning titles last year, scored two falls and a decision at 120 pounds. She improved to 26-2 on the year with a 10-5 decision over Ayden Erickson from Perry.

Abbe Gorham was a runner-up for the Bulldogs, with Mara Davis, Gretchen Gorham and Carlee Allen all placing third. Savannah Steven and Reagan Haynes were both fourth.

After picking up two quick falls to reach the 130-pound finals, Abbe Gorham suffered a loss to Mason City’s Kallie Gibbons. Mara Davis battled back following a loss in the semis to record two falls and earn bronze at 100.

Allen, wrestling at 235, also won two straight to earn third after getting knocked out in the quarterfinals. Gretchen Gorham added to her runner-up finish from a season ago.

Humboldt’s Sophia Harris earned her second invite title, pinning her way to the 110-pound crown. The senior defeated Kailee Spencer from Spencer in the finals for her second third period fall of the meet.

Brooklyn Robinson was the 235-pound runner-up for a second consecutive season after falling to defending state champion Olivia Huckfelt of Spencer in the finals. Danica Diedrick was third at 170, battling back after a loss to three-time undefeated state champion Naomi Simon, while Laina Dettmann finished fourth at 120.

Emmetsburg’s Kylie Iverson suffered her first loss of the season in the 155-pound finals when she was bested by Decorah’s Lauren Luzum, with teammate JayLynn Vazquez placing third.

Jaymie Anderson and Maria Calles Castro were both fourth for Eagle Grove. Anderson, now 25-2 on the year, also finished third here last season.
