Dodgers come up big on the road

MARSHALLTOWN — A night after coming up short vs. Humboldt, the Fort Dodge girls bounced back in a big way here Friday.

The Dodgers led early and often against the Bobcats, coasting to a 59-34 victory.

LJ Maehl and Meah McCaleb each recorded double-doubles for Fort Dodge, as three players reached double figures.

Maehl had 19 points and 10 rebounds, McCaleb added 17 and 10, Dakota Pommer had 10 points and Brooklyn Pommer recorded nine steals.

McCaleb and Ashlyn Wills each had five steals with Wills dishing out two assists. Maehl blocked five shots, Dakota Pommer had five rebounds and Mackenzie McIlrath chipped in five points and three assists.

“I thought we played a really solid game,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “We were able to change defenses from 1-2-2 to 1-3-1 to man throughout the night.

“Everybody came in and played hard for us, giving us quality minutes.”

After one, the Dodgers (4-3 overall, 1-2 in Iowa Alliance North) were ahead, 18-8. That lead grew to 13 at the break before taking command with a big third quarter to go up, 48-19.

Fort Dodge has won nine straight vs. Marshalltown (3-5, 1-2) and 24 of the last 31 meetings overall. These two meets meet again on Feb. 2 in Fort Dodge.

The Dodgers will close out their pre-holiday schedule on Monday when they host Spencer at 6:15 p.m. The Tigers are 0-6 on the year with all six losses coming by at least 19 points.
