Webster City plays for 3A semifinal bid

CRESTON — Just 13 football teams remain unbeaten in the state of Iowa.

One of those will welcome in Webster City here Friday night in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

The Lynx (8-2 overall) take on Creston (10-0) for a spot in the semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls next week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Last Friday night, Webster City handled Nevada for its fifth consecutive win, 27-7. Jaxon Cherry rushed for 200 yards and three TDs as the Lynx jumped out to an early 14-0 lead.

Keegan Hisler added 62 yards on the ground and Briar Klaver had a 23-yard rushing score. The Webster City defense held Cason Stevenson to just 59 yards rushing, as Nevada quarterback Connor King finished 6 of 14 for 55 yards.

On the year, Cherry has 1,699 yards rushing and 24 scores, Hisler has 682 and six, and Cael Nixon has 588 with seven. The Lynx have rushed 491 times for 3,253 yards, scoring 39 touchdowns.

Webster City has won at least six games five straight seasons and 13 of the last 16 overall. In 2016, they reached the state championship, losing to Pella, a year after advancing to the quarterfinals.

Creston topped Harlan for a second time this season, 35-27, adding to wins over Nevada, Carroll, Ballard, Lewis Central and Winterset. Senior Cael Turner has thrown for 2,442 yards with 29 touchdowns, as both Brennan Hayes and Brandon Briley have over 700 yards receiving and 17 combined scores.

Hayes is also the leading rusher with 1,547 yards and 15 more touchdowns.

The Panthers won just one game three years ago before putting together back-to-back six-win marks. The 10 victories this season are the most since 2014 when they finished 10-3.

The eight teams left standing in 3A are a combined 70-10, as West Delaware takes on Solon, Mount Vernon meets Williamsburg and Sioux City Heelan squares off with Sioux Center in the other games.
