Timeout with Thomas Cosgrove

For some, running might not be the most enjoyable form of entertainment.

For Thomas Cosgrove, it was a way to connect and thrive at St. Edmond.

The Gael senior recently concluded his senior cross country season by placing 106th at the Class 1A state championships, helping St. Edmond to a 15th-place finish overall.

Cosgrove also helped the Gaels secure eighth last year as a junior while running on the team that finished 10th his sophomore season. St. Edmond was at the state meet as a complete unit for the fourth consecutive time.

While growing up, Cosgrove saw the high-standard head coach Mike Szalat and assistant coach Monica Shelly laid out for the cross country team.

“I saw that the program was successful and wanted to contribute (at an early age),” Cosgrove said. “And a lot of my upperclassmen friends were involved in it.”

From there, he found a passion for the sport.

“How we used to find ways to make running fun is something I’ll remember most about my time with the team,” he said. “I’ll also never forget being able to run the state meet in my hometown.”

Cosgrove not only got to run state races at Lakeside Golf Course, he also helped the Gaels to a bronze medal finish at the North Central Conference meet this past fall was placing 14th himself.

“Hard work pays off,” Cosgrove said. “Success depends on the summer miles and always having a positive attitude.”

Along with cross country, he has been involved in basketball, track and field, National Honor Society and Fort Dodge Junior Leadership Program.

Next year, Cosgrove will attend Iowa State University to major in kinesiology or biology with plans to work in the healthcare field.
