Madlock named Player of Year

Mercedes Madlock left her name on the Iowa Central volleyball record books over her two-year stint.

Now, she has another honor.

Madlock was tabbed the ICCAC Div. II Player of the Year, joining recent former Tritons Katilyn Steffes and Alesha Johnson to win the award.

She helped Iowa Central earn a sixth consecutive regular season title and fourth bid to the NJCAA Div. II Championships.

Madlock has recorded 1,280 assists, which is seventh-most in the country. The sophomore is the only conference player to average double-digit assists per set at 10.32, which ranks sixth-most.

Joining Madlock on the first team for the Tritons was sophomore Noemia Chiacchio, who broke the school-record for aces in a season with 104. She also led the ICCAC in kills per set at 3.89 and has recorded 478 on the year.

Chiacchio had nine-plus kills in 33 of 36 matches played.

St. Edmond graduate Mya McClain and former Manson Northwest Webster standout Olivia Sturgis were both on the second team for Iowa Central.

McClain, a sophomore, had 624 digs and 59 aces this year while Sturgis, a freshman, recorded 264 kills, 110 block assists and 18 solo blocks.
