Fort Dodge girls win opener at Boone, 41-34

BOONE — The Fort Dodge girls kicked off the 2023-24 season with a 41-34 victory here Monday night over Boone.

The Dodgers (1-0 overall) also started last year off with a win over the Toreadors on their way to a 12-10 mark, tying for the most wins in a season for the program since 2006-07.

Sophomore LJ Maehl led the way with 16 points, adding nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior Meah McCaleb had six points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists, while sophomore Dakota Pommer had seven points with four rebounds and three steals.

The Toreadors (3-1) posted victories over Webster City, Des Moines East and Nevada last week.

“I’m so proud of my coaches and players for having us ready for this one,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “Boone was 3-0 coming in, so it was big to (defeat an opponent) with a full week of games – and wins — already under their belt.”

Junior Ashlyn Wills, junior Brooklyn Pommer and senior Mackenzie McIlrath each scored four points, as Pommer had five rebounds and four steals.

“We played a press and trap for most of the game, which allowed us to get in the passing lanes and deflect the ball,” Messerly said. “LJ had a big first half scoring (12 points) to carry us early on.”

The Dodgers play their next two games at home, hosting Ames on Friday and Des Moines Hoover next Tuesday.
