Gaels drop regular-season finale

As Matt Dillon took in the conditions here Friday night inside Dodger Stadium, the St. Edmond head football coach knew his team was in trouble.

One of the top passing attacks in eight-player, the Gaels were unable to overcome driving rain and constant winds, falling in the season finale to Glidden-Ralston, 62-16.

“There really isn’t anything you can do when your focus in on the pass and the weather is like this,” Dillon said. “That is a physical team that really starts everything off up front with the line. They took it to us and there wasn’t really anything we could do about it.”

St. Edmond (4-4 overall, 2-4 in district) honored its lone seniors, JT Laufersweiler and Leo Ehn, on the night. Laufersweiler threw for almost 4,000 yards in his SEHS career and accounted for 72 touchdowns.

“I told those guys at the half that they have done everything the right way,” Dillon said. “They have meant so much to this program and I just hated that we couldn’t send them out in a better way. Regardless of what happened (Friday), we are in a better place because of having JT and Leo on this team.”

Sam Myer darted 64 yards to the end zone on the opening possession of the game and Laufersweiler hit Ehn for the conversion. Myer finished with 73 yards rushing and Laufersweiler had 56 on the ground.

From there, though, it was all Glidden-Ralston (6-2, 5-1), as they scored 56 unanswered points including 38 in the first half. Colby Wallace rushed for 187 yards and scored five touchdowns with Emmett Snyder adding 93 yards on the ground as part of a 344-yard team performance.

The Wildcats also had an interception return for a score from Alex Daniel and a kickoff return by Lucas Christian.

“We watched them and knew they weren’t going to do anything real flash,” Dillon said. “Instead, they just line up and come at you. We weren’t ready to handle that and it showed. That is an area we have to improve upon if we want to take that next step kind of like they did.”

Freshman Aaron Hindt added a late touchdown for the Gaels, darting in from nine yards out for his first varsity score. Another ninth-grader, Jacob Nieland recovered a fumble in the fourth.

“JT and Leo have done an incredible job of leading this team and that is something we are going to have to replace,” Dillon said. “But we have an incredible amount of kids coming back with a lot of experience.”
