Late rally ousts West Bend-Mallard
ANITA — West Bend-Mallard was on the verge of advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday, but Anita-CAM had a different plan.
The Wolverines (7-3 overall) led 34-22 late, but the Cougars (10-0) scored 14 unanswered points to remain unbeaten with a thrilling 36-34 victory.
Anita-CAM will now play Bishop Garrigan (9-1) on Thursday in Algona. The Golden Bears advance with a 21-18 win over previously-unbeaten Remsen St. Mary’s (10-0).
Junior quarterback Chase Spieker plunged in from two yards out to tie the contest at 34-34 with 14 seconds left. Spieker than rolled left and made his way to the end zone for the two-point conversion.
West Bend built an early 22-6 lead and held a 28-14 advantage at half, as the teams combined for 42 points in the second quarter after a scoreless first.
The Wolverines first scored after they held the Cougars on the one-yard line. West Bend-Mallard marched 79 yards, capped off by a Landon Montag one-yard plunge. Montag later added another one-yard TD.
West Bend-Mallard went up 22-6 on a Cole Fehr 39-yard touchdown run. Logan Grimm capped off the first half Wolverine scoring with a four-yard run for the 28-14 halftime advantage.
CAM scored on their first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to 28-22. WB-M quickly responded on a 36-yard jaunt from Montag. The senior quarterback finished with three touchdowns.
Spieker then cut the deficit to six on a one-yard score.
Seniors Drew Fehr, Carter Fehr, Aiden Yoch, Montag, Grimm, Mitch Stevens, Cortlyn Schupbach, Jaxon Zaugg and Trennedy Allen played their final game in a Wolverines’ jersey on Friday.
