Gaels stay in the playoff hunt

COLO — JT Laufersweiler accounted for seven touchdowns and the St. Edmond football team received a key interception from Jakob Koopman late here Friday night to upset Colo-Nesco, 48-42.

Playing short-handed, the Gaels were able to snap a three-game district losing skid, keeping home alive for a playoff bid.

Laufersweiler, a senior, threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns, as Grant Galles caught nine for 177 with three scores. The fourth passing TD by Laufersweiler was the game-winner, as it deflected off the hands of Galles and into the hands of Kinnick Henning in the end zone with just over four minutes to go.

Koopman picked off Colo-Nesco’s Breckin Clatt on the ensuing drive and St. Edmond (4-3 overall, 2-3 in district) was able to run out the clock with a pair of first downs.

“That was a heck of a game between two teams who gave it everything they had,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “That is what high school football is all about. We had some big plays from guys all night long, and in the end, we were able to get the win.

“There is still plenty to be sorted out, but we had to have this one to give ourselves a chance at the playoffs. Now, we’ll see what happens next week.”

Sam Myer ran for a career-high 193 yards on 28 carries, scoring a pair of key early two-point conversions after short Laufersweiler touchdown runs. Laufersweiler added a third rushing score in the third quarter, finishing with 49 yards on the ground.

For the Royals, Mark Bower ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns while Lucas Frohwein caught two scores from Clatt. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Colo-Nesco (5-3, 2-2) and spoiled Senior Night.

The two teams exchanged touchdowns early before St. Edmond reeled off three consecutive scores between the second and third quarters. The Royals, though, answered back with 16 straight points before Laufersweiler hit Galles on fourth-and-13 for a 37-yard strike.

“JT stepped up and Grant made an incredible play, staying in bounds and taking it to the house,” Dillon said. “We felt like it might be one of those games where the team with the ball last wins; I’m just glad we were the ones who got the big plays late like Koopman’s interception, converted a couple of first downs and got out of there with it.”

Myer was the workhorse in the second half, wearing down the Colo-Nesco defense with 17 rushes for 137 yards including a big 35-yard burst on the game-winning drive. Laufersweiler threw for 137 yards in the opening 24 minutes and was 8-for-16 for 163 after the break.

Koopman finished with six receptions for 64 yards and Leo Ehn caught three passes for 45. Adam Walker had a sack and Quintin Jaeschke recovered a fumble.

St. Edmond will now head home to conclude the regular season next Friday at Dodger Stadium vs. Glidden-Ralston. The Wildcats (6-2, 4-1) topped Coon Rapids-Bayard last night, 24-6.
