Dodgers 2nd at IAC meet

AMES — The Fort Dodge girls swim team gave themselves some late-season momentum here Thursday night, placing second at the Iowa Alliance Conference Championships.

The Dodgers finished with 182 points as Ames won team gold. Des Moines Lincoln was third followed by Marshalltown, Mason City, Des Moines Roosevelt, Ottumwa, Des Moines North, Des Moines East and Des Moines Hoover.

“It was a really an incredible night,” said Fort Dodge head coach Ashley Beaumont. “We had some best times and for us to come in and beat teams that we lost to in the season is great.”

Julia Eastman was crowned a conference champion, as the junior captured the 200 individual medley. She recorded a time of 2:18.44, winning the race by almost six full seconds.

“She (Eastman) was ranked pretty high up there,” Beaumont said. “To get a conference championship, helps get her ready for regionals.”

Eastman was also the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.41 while swimming on the second place 200 medley relay. Joining her were Raegan Wooldridge, Gracie Harvey and Hailey Vogel, as the quartet clocked a time of 1:56.04.

Vogel added a runner-up in the 50 free in 25.46 and was third in the 100 free in 55.96.

“Hailey has some good competition in the 50 and 100 freestye,” Beaumont said. “Saylor (Horras) is a strong swimmer and Hailey will see her at regionals and state.”

The 200 free relay of Eastman, Kylen Lubensky, Delaney O’Connor and Vogel went 1:47.92 to finish third.

“The 200 medley was great and it was their best time,” Beaumont said. “They haven’t rested yet, so I still see them being able to drop some time.”

Harvey was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.39), O’Connor placed fifth in diving (317.75) and Wooldridge was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.18) and sixth in the 500 free (5:56.37).

Fort Dodge is now off until Nov. 2 (diving) and Nov. 4 (swimming) when they travel to Ames for districts. Joining the Dodgers will be the host Little Cyclones along with Boone, Carroll, Hoover, Marshalltown, Oskaloosa, Perry and Sioux City.
