The final day of the state cross country championships brought even more bitter cold temperatures to Lakeside Golf Course.

Class 2A and 3A runners, though, braved the elements and secured their hardware to conclude the season.

It was a memorable day for Des Moines Christian, as the boys repeated in 2A with the girls joining them atop the team standings. In 3A, Pella nearly did the same, as the girls were first but the boys came up short of a repeat with Gilbert coming out on top.

Individual titles went to Mid-Prairie’s Emmett Swartzentruber and Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Hillary Trainor in 2A, while Pella’s Canaan Dunham and Marissa Ferebee were victorious in 3A.

Trainor, a senior, ended the three-year reign of Mid-Prairie’s Danielle Hostetler, who settled for fifth overall.

Eli Johnson of Bedford was crowned the 1A wheelchair champion.

In her second consecutive appearance at state, Humboldt’s Brynn Malo was 71st in 3A. Malo, a sophomore, clocked a time of 20:34.1.

East Sac County finished ninth in the 2A standings. Isaiah Aragon had a personal-record of 16:41 to finish 18th for the Raiders.

Parker Engel was 20th with Landon Sporrer placing 68th.

Owen Engel was 91st for the Raiders followed by Riley Aragon (120th) and Xander Hemer (129th).

South Central Calhoun’s Redge Potts crossed the tape in 82nd with a time of 17:45.6. Potts is a junior.

For Greene County, junior Noah Hinote took 87th in 17:27.9.
