Algona edged by Sioux Center

SIOUX CENTER — Algona nearly pulled off a first round upset in Class 3A on Friday, but Sioux Center held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second half.

The Bulldogs (6-4 overall) — the 12th-seed — fell 28-21 to the fourth-seeded Warriors (9-1).

Sioux Center will now face Sioux City Heelan, which ousted district champion Clear Lake by a 22-19 final on Friday night.

It was a big first half for Div. I recruit Alex Manske, as the junior quarterback led the Bulldogs with three combined touchdowns.

Manske threw a TD pass to Porter Reffer to start the scoring.

The next touchdown came on a 60-yard flea flicker. Manske flipped the ball to Jayden Erpelding, who then gave the ball back to Manske, who slung it 60 yards to Reffer.

Manske capped off the Bulldog scoring with an eight-yard plunge. Manske finished the first half 6-for-11 passing with 168 yards.

The Warriors tied the contest on a one-yard TD from Seth Andersen, off a fumble recovery from Algona.

Brodie Van Regenmorter reached the end zone for the go-ahead score.

Manske threw his first interception of the season in the first half and finished with three picks. The Bulldogs turned the ball over five times in the setback.

Algona had a chance to score with a 1:30 left in the contest as they drove to the Warriors’ nine-yard line. Manske fired the ball deep into the end zone, but was picked off.

Landon Welp, Erpelding, Daniel Kemna, Refer, Dylan Wickman, Ian Fehr, Matt Hoover, Skyler Fisher, Jeremiah Murphy, Reid Louwagie, Colby Jennings, Shrji Patel, Chase Roof, Bryton Thompson, Cort Kelin, Caleb Penner, Hunter Kollasch, Cohen Reffer and Brody Gronau played their final game in an Algona jersey.
